Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Picked the car up today. First impressions are that the new suspension bushes and springs have certainly firmed things up and car felt much better. Had a good detailed look over the bodywork in sunlight whilst cleaning when I got home, only wet day for ages, and very happy with the finish. Have a lo...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Car now completed. I will be picking up tomorrow. This is from the Grandstand Coachworks open morning last week. Car complete with lazy passenger sun vizor (see wanted post). Lots of attention and always good to speak to people about rotary engines. Even though only about 50 people attended I still ...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

On the final stretch now. Underside of the car is now complete. Full set of Energy Suspension bushes fitted. Racing Beat springs fitted. We decided not to bother with doing underside between the chassis rails as all looked good. Just outside of chassis rails. Final job is to complete the wheels. The...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Topside of car is now nearly complete. Just waiting delivery of new windscreen from Pilkington. Rear side windows were bonded in yesterday. Black rubber components on bumpers have been painted with a black rubber paint which is apparently used on lorry trailers. They look really good and better than...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Went over to view the paint today. Re-assembly already started in some areas. Paint looks very good and has been finished to a 1980's spec as requested, thus not as hyper polished as a modern car would be. Colour looks very good under daylight bulbs. Previous images in spray booth are not so well li...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Over the last week the car has had full body prep and been sprayed. Will be visiting on Monday to check it out. From the many photos I have received it looks like a great job. Once paint has had a chance to harden they will do re-assembly. Then all of the suspension is coming off to be refinished an...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Went to see the car today. Picked final colour from all of the spray outs done. The one done from scan came out very dark. Good progress on fixing the rot shown above. New metal let in and also strengthening panel reinforced and refitted. We have decided to run sealer all round the edge of the panel...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Rust was just starting to show in the passenger side rear seat well. Looking at the outside it didn't look too bad. However when strengthening plate removed standard FB rot found. This will be sorted shortly and drivers side plate is being taken off tomorrow. Will visit on Thursday to look at all th...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Yes currently going for the darker one. Pain is being scanned today to see what that comes out with. Challenge is finding an area of the car where the original paint hasn't faded too much. Pleased that very little rust was found. Image below shows the hole in rear drivers wheel arch. Also a pinprick...

Re: MAZ1986 - 1985 S3

Yes I didn't think camera would be able to distinguish but they are very slightly different. I will probably go for the darker one.

We are on stand 1-540. Apparently next to the big Maguires stand.

See you next week.
