Hi there I fitted a carter like yours on my 82 12a bp running a webber 48ida the conectors are fine but they need to be pushed all the way onto the plastic pump bottom I cut a small bit off the black part and found they fitted better Pump is mounted on rear passenger side chassis rail in upright pos...

Would be interested to have a pic of your temp sensor cable as mine looks the same colour as your disconnected wire, As for rock auto would never buy from them again there Customer Service is terrible they sent me 2 front strut mounts one made in China one made in Thailand the Chinese one had adjust...

OK yeah the cap has 2 valves it should let out the fluid under expansion  but also allow the fluid back in under vacuum from what your saying the expansion tank is not getting enough vacuum to pull the fluid back in to the rad
