12A stripdown

Post by ian65 »

In an effort to de-clutter my garage a bit, I decided to strip down a 12a engine today to see if there were any parts in it worth saving and to free up some space under the work bench.

the weird emission thing off the top of the centre plate...

Image

leaves it looking like this...

all this stripping down leaves the bare bones engine...

zipped the bolts out and split the engine, the rear plate....

the rear rotor and housing...

edge wear on the front rotor housing..... it'll make a nice ornament....

Rotors look ok, end plates look ok, housings ok, dunno why anyone would want to use that centre plate.

That's a S1 motor you've got there.

Keep the front and rear plates. I would like to take a look at them please.

Rear housing can be reused imho. There's almost none left now so definitely don't toss it.

it had been dropped into a series 3 Elford Turbo as a replacement engine ( the black Elford I stripped for Dibs a few years back) I'll get everything cleaned up a bit better and take some better pictures.... apart from the edge wear, it looked to be in good condition considering it had been running boost.

Check the water seal grooves for damage/corrosion and cracks around the spark plug holes for a start.

Here's a good read regarding the plates you've got:

Interesting. Best check your oil pump for 17.5mm rotor sets, but I'd be amazed if it had them tbh.

I've had it kicking around for nearly 3 years now Mark... I pulled it out of a car back then and poured a load of 2 stroke oil into the chambers , spun it over, blocked up the ports with tissue and then left it.
I took it out of the black Elford in this thread.....

the seller said it had been off the road for a while..... a good while I would think looking at the amount of rust in the shell.
