Greetings from Southern California

Post by gtonning »

Always happy to meet other RX7 enthusiasts. I really enjoy the photos y'all have posted. I'm very happy to see so many First Gen RX7s maintained in original condition.

I’ve owned a total of five RX7s. My first was a dark gray ’83 GSL, purchased in 1984; the second a light gray (silver) ’83 GSL. These two cars were stolen a total of three times.

The first one was stolen off the street, not ten feet from where I was sleeping. I bought the second as a replacement. Then the police discovered the first one, abandoned with the center console destroyed and the radio ripped out. My insurance company salvaged the car and let me buy it back. They also paid me enough to have the car repaired and repainted. I was a happy camper.

Then the second one, my replacement, was stolen from a shopping mall parking lot. About a year later, the first one was stolen a second time; again off the street outside my bedroom window. I was not a happy camper.

I was now a little gun shy about RX7s. But I like them so much I still wanted another one. I looked for almost twenty years and finally, in 2011, I found what I wanted. It is blue GSL with a yellow (camel? tan?) interior, manual transmission, and 83,000 miles. It has non-original wheels and radio, but I’m working on that. I’m a happy camper again. And this one is locked in a garage every night!

I have also owned an ’87 GSL that I donated to charity when it became too expensive to repair. And now, in addition to the blue '83, I have an ’89 convertible, also blue.

I had a vision of CA as being a very happy fairly crime-free place, if a little frantic.
Shows what not travelling does for you.

Cheers and welcome......the only things stolen on here are good ideas!
