Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
in yet another bizarre and disturbing development, I've discovered that if I turn the sidelights on without the key in the ignition and press either of the window switches, the fuel pump runs until I release the window switch................. like WT actual F is going on?

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
i think your fb is haunted by the sounds of it. or it was used as a james bond car before they switched to an aston martin.
just don't flick the button on the gear knob.
i used to get my headlights going out on my mx3 from main beam to dip, it seemed to be the plug in the steering column had a burnt wire.
you could check all around the area where the hazard light etc switch sit. i had thought of a wiring fault in around the radio area too.
but be best trying each side light and see, maybe get an auto spark if all else fails.

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
my central locking kit arrived today
looking forward to fitting this....

wiring it up..... not so much...

need to fix my existing electrical woes first though..... the way the car is at the moment, if I press the remote it'll probably start itself up and drive off down the road

paint it black and put a red scanner light in the front and be like knight rider.
i'd get the gremlins sorted before adding to them.

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
By following Keiths excellent writeup I Installed this central locking kit today and it's the business........ can't believe Mazda didn't install C/L from the factory......I didn't take many photos as I was too busy working on it....
it was time consuming because first I had to adapt the loom from a 4 door kit to a 2 door by removing the actuator supply wires that I didn't need and then binding the loom which took a while...
from this...

to this...

Next I took the seats out to run the passenger door wires under the carpet.... I'd probably have run them across the car behind the dash but I needed to check the wires to the centre console to try to sort out my other wiring issues so it made sense to do both jobs at the same time.
The worse part of the job was feeding the wires through the doors..... my doors are full of waxoil and the stuff is everywhere.... I got in a right mess with it
A very cheap, simple improvement though... well worth doing.

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
In my rush to get this car on the road for Retrorides Gathering after it's 20 year lay up, I made a couple of mistakes whilst putting the turbo on. First, I used a S3 exhaust gasket which didn't suit the Elford Turbo manifold and didn't cover the emission ports on the engine so the manifold gasket leaked.I swapped it for the proper gasket but again did a rushed job to get it mot'd and within a few days, it leaked again. Next, I had a leak somewhere on the inlet which produced a loud whistle.
I've lived with the annoying whistle and the fumes from the exhaust manifold leak coming into the car since last summer but as my Jaguar yet again needs open wallet surgery and I need to use the RX7 as a daily for the next few weeks, I thought I'd better sort these issues out.
I bought yet another exhaust manifold gasket from Rockauto, an inlet gasket from Mazda, some Garrett turbo gaskets and 20mm stainless core plugs off Ebay...

and tonight I stripped the turbo, carb and inlet off the car...

fitted the core plugs to block the unused water gallery...

there's a fuel drain on the bottom of the compressor that goes to the inlet and this was loose.... don't know if that was causing the whistle but it can't have helped.... put it back in tight now...

and put the inlet back on with the new gasket...

Build the rest of it back up tomorrow.
