Thermal reactor removal
Thermal reactor removal
Hi, i have read some great posts about removal of the thermal reactor and air pump, thanks for them.
Sorry for still being slow.
If i remove all the components such as the reactor and the air pump, will i need to do anything else apart from the fitting the blanking plate, and closing the air box hose?
It seems a little to easy.
Has anyone got or know of where i can get a blanking plate from?
Thanks Dave

Re: Thermal reactor removal
Hi
I recently done this and yeah its pretty much that simple, although ive not driven mine yet it makes a huge difference even reving the engine in neutral!
I took the inlet manifold off to access the thermo reactor bolts as there impossible to undo with the inlet in place unless you have a modified spanner etc for the job...so you'll also need a gasket for the inlet, while your in there consider blocking the coolant lines through the inlet manifold ( have a read online) mine had been leaking for a long time so i blocked mine off as there likely to leak again.
You need 2 blanking plates,i had a local garage cut through some metal and shape it, its doable at home but much easier when you have air tools etc to hand.
Plenty more tips ive missed to come I'm sure
Rich

Re: Thermal reactor removal
Hi Rich, thanks for your answer.
I am going to give it a go at the weekend.
How big are the blanking plates you have had made, if i get some steel i am sure i can make somthing at home. You dont have a picture by any chance?
As for the coolant lines, isn't that a bad idea?
Thanks again Dave

Re: Thermal reactor removal
Have a look at these instructions for fitting of stainless exhaust & blanking plates. Plates are not very big:
Ignore the handwriting at the top.

Also I've never blanked my manifold but lots have. It's 2 'O' rings in the inlet manifold which perish and need renewal. Others have put core plugs in as solid stoppers. It seems to be minimal effect on warm up in UK, but I prefer to keep the 'O' rings.

Re: Thermal reactor removal
Well the reactor is off, I have named it bas@!#$ as it was so hard to get off. I tried to take it off without touching the manifold, but it was impossible. Lucky I did as the manifold is not in good shape. I feel like I have just killed my car.
About the blocking off, of the water holes! It looks as if my 2 O rings have perished, and I don't understand how to block them off.
As for a new gasket, so I really have to order one from Aus or the US, or as anyone got any good ideas?
Thank you for all your posts and feeds, I wouldn't of been able to get the thing off!
Thanks Dave

Re: Thermal reactor removal
Thanks guys.
When blanking the air control valve off should I but buy the parts from the engine back in, such as the small metal ring tube. Or is there no point as the air valve has been removed?
Cheers
