oh ok and yeah I know how it is when projects take 2 to 3 years because just other stuff gets in the way but when your done and finish with it , it will be well worth the wait and I just seen your post with the pics and videos some nice stuff and if you don't mind me asking are you going to be selling your old elford turbo set up after your done with your conversion ?ian65 wrote:I'm doing an engine swap from a 1990 2nd gen Turbo II convertible... it's been ongoing for the last 2 years... other stuff keeps getting in the way... prep and plans for engine swap started here...

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
another season of rotary driving has come to an end..... my Elford is safely tucked away for the winter on a bed of peacock feathers so I'll have to get my rotary fix by carrying on with the prep of my TII engine.

Do you have a target date for the swap......or once you are happy with the prep?

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
once I've got all the various components ready.... the engine is almost done now, just need to blast clean the manifolds then bolt it all up.... the Megasquirt is 50% built and tested, the transmission has been converted to fit the 1st gen... I need to buy a new fuel pump, swirl pot and get the prop shortened and then I'm ready to swap it all into the car....
Hopefully next year it will all come together.... that bloody Mini has sucked up loads of cash and will also suck up my time to get it fixed which I need to do first to get it out of the garage again.
Most of the prep work for the TII swap is done now though.

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
I have had a slight issue with the vert dropping out of boost during full flight , tried all the obvious, Prof Tim thought it could be the Electric OMP as if it is faulty puts into lim mode, so I cleaned all the connections problem solved, so it would be worth checking/cleaning them while you have easy access.
Once the swap is completed you will have a Fire Breathing Monster with all that power I will imagine she will be quite a handfull & the definition of a "Wolf in Sheep's clothing". Will you be putting a vent in the bonnet for the Intercooler?

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
I'm going with a complete new loom along with the Megasquirt ECU, but yes, you're right, I've cleaned up any connectors that I'm reusing off the original loom.....on my engine I've ditched the electric OMP and gone back to mechanical.
Re the intercooler, I'm torn between using the stock TII intercooler and fitting a bonnet vent like this ...

or fitting a larger front mounted IC and staying with the stock look.... I'm more a fan of the sleeper look than something that's overly aggressive so I'll probably leave the car looking stock.....changes may be forced upon me though if I need to upgrade the brakes and suspension and have to go to TII hubs and 5 bolt wheels.

Re: 1986 Series 3 Elford Turbo
so a few weeks after I sold my full Elford bodykit I saw an Elford rear wing for sale on Ebay so bought it for my car to replace the Mazda installed rubber mudtrap...

came off a silver car as well so although it's not a perfect match, it will do for now.... I do love an Elford rear wing!
