The sun popped out for this afternoon on christmas eve so I got the bonnet up and treated all the bare metal in the engine bay with a first round of Jenolite to start sealing it and dissolving the surface rust ready for primer or paint, will get he soft wheel grinder on it in the new year but the cross member has come up nice and all the steering linkages and torsion bars have taken a good coat :D

Weather has been crap and been away for xmas so not done much, bought a few items though as its very cheap after xmas, managed to get 2 brand new genuine ford down pipes for the 2.8 to replace the rusted out pipes underneath. these will sit nice to under the seats where they will get a small box each then out the side just in front of the wheels with rectangle stainless ends and managed to find a nice new locking petrol cap so need to drill the old one out next

Great day yesterday and as I had some welding for my dads van for his MOT and repair a hole in the MX5 wheel arch I repaired the hole in the engine bay on the base of the strut tower.
I started stripping the brakes down which are seized solid, the calipers appear to be moving so a good soak in diesel should help. The brackets are on solid which I need off to get the discs refaced as they seem pretty good and not pitted.
Just awaiting an oil seal and spigot bearing to get the engine back in
Drilled out the old fuel cap and fitted the new one and I have stuck about 10 litres of contaminated fuel from work into the tank to clean any muck out when I pump the tank out again and this should wash the fuel lines too as they have been empty for 17 years.
think the reason it was laid up was due to the old ignition key being snapped off in the fuel cap
While waiting for filler to dry on the mx5 I set about the underside with a wire brush and then undersealed the whole of the passenger side of the car.
Just awaiting a quote for the OS chassis rail to be rebuilt as that was quite bad after attacking it with a hammer and getting a pro to reweld about 40cm of rail into place then thats the grot done with and i can underseal the rest of the car and the tunnel before the engine gets refitted.
Just getting quotes for a new windscreen to be fitted so hopefully done in the next 6 weeks
Got 2 new downpipes for the engine, going to cut out the old exhaust and make a new custom one with side exits
paint is starting to arrive, got some unusual colour custom paint for the engine mixed up that i will surprise people with later and the satin back for the bay has arrived, just awaiting some primer first
the block will be painted silver to make it stand out and then I will buy some universal coloured piping for the cooling system and ordered stainless steel jubilee clips for all pipes :)

Good Stuff there mate.

I don't think I'd soak the callipers in diesel though. Old brake fluid sure but I assume you want to reuse them if you can free them off?
Diesel might contaminate them?

Quick update today, had the rear window bonded back in, the windscreen company arrived with the wrong screen so thats put back now
Turns out one of my neighbours is a pro welder so a week saturday the chassis rail is being rebuilt :D

So that means engine can go back in after, so while the welding is going on, I am removin cluch and flywheel and fitting a new spigot bearing and bolting it all back together ready to go in

Today I started on some aesthetics for the engine and displaying engine colour scheme, these will be mounted on a silver engine block in a matt black bay

yes its a Ford 2.8 litre V6 going in because its a lot cheaper to buy a ford engine than replace the missing rotary engine, spares cost almost nothing and they make a great noise
plus its going to be quite a different car when im done with it th:

Busy weekend on the rex this weekend due to the good weather W(p

Saturday
I stripped the interior down to dashboard only, binned the rottin carpets as they stink and wil probably sell the rest of the interior for someone elses project.
My neighbour came round and welded everything that needed doing on the car so the welding is al finished and he did a great job rebuilding a large part of chassis rail under the drivers seat, found the fault as well, seems to center around a little metal panel that is help down under the sound proofing so that will be refitted with some seam sealer soon.

sunday
Got into the bay as it was nice all day, stripped both headlights down and removed it all from the car ready to work on those, considering removing the motors and have some fixed rectangle lamps installed
I sanded a large area and used a wire wheel grinder all over the place where I could clear the loom to, managed to prime and single coat it all today with a little fan heater running and starting to come along nicely.
All parts are in for the engine so I will start on that soon as I stripped the old seized V6 today to salvage as many parts as possible for the 2.8
just waiting for another tin of waxoyl as I got the drivers side finished but still need to do the tunnel before the engine and gearbox goes in

Trying to find a windscreen is becoming a ball ache, hopefully this weeks company will come with the correct screen

Currently awaiting delivery of special order pearlescent silver engine paint, tin of seam sealer and waxoyl to finish the under side
