a leak somewhere at the carb spacer.
might to remove the carb and do it again.
give both side on carb spacer a lapping with enery paper, clean and give it a thin layer of gasket sealer.( don't cover it over the vam holes).
It will work sure enough.

Ok so a little update. I had it running again today. I can only start it if i create a vac leak but once it's up and running i connect it back up again and it seems ok. A little off but it's ok.

So as i said before the problem gets worse over time. I thought i'd check the timing, at 1000rpm and the vacuum advance blocked off it starts of a 0 degrees leading and 10 degress trailing from what i know that is correct.

Over time though as it's getting warmer the timing gets more and more retarded. Before it cut out the leading was somewhere near 15 degress btdc how can this be so? It would then fail to start. I'll try again tomorrow

I would block off the vaccum advance and give it a go, timing should of course be set at a natural idle but if you have moved it too far off you may be getting it moving as the engine warms and the speed increases. It should not change without a change in engine speed / vacuum.

Check your mechanical advance is moving freely.

Right. Finally got it sorted, idles fine, revs fine but wow does it smoke badly the warmer it gets the worse it smokes. Seems like coolant seals have gone. I haven't gone into it too much but I'm pretty sure it's that. Just gonna rebuild the sucker. It needed doing anyway as the compression was on the low side. I can't risk buying another engine. I'm not giving up on the old girl yet lol. Still haven't driven it in 3 years but I still have that urge to get behind the wheel. Oh well, wish me luck guys. I'll probably need some housings at some point but until it's in pieces thanks for the help guys

Are you sure it's coolant? Is it loosing any?

If you have put oil or aft in it to help the compression along it takes ages to clear tn out.
