The new one is starting to get small amounts of stuff in the bottom already and i haven't driven it anywhere lol. I don't really want to adjust the idle as I trust Ian in what he said about the carb being setup fine before hand. I will try to dig a little deeper into the fueling and iginition side of things now as i guess that the engine will probably be ok. I know it's not accurate with a piston compression tester but at least its giving me something that is OK...

As soon as the choke goes it all hell breaks lose. The Car just acts completely different :-(
It's only turning a screw dude. Not taking it apart. Not like you can't turn it back. ;)

Yeah I agree that it's too hard to diagnose over the internet. The only person I know of who is close would be Jimmy's RX7. I can't get the car there though as it has no tax or mot :( I took it for a small drive yesterday and it runs fine apart from the lack of idle. It only seems to misfire a lot under deceleration. Acceleration is nice and smooth though with no jerking or misfires (that I can hear anyway) I don't know about the power as I don't know how quick they should be when working correctly. I think I'm now getting to that stage where I'm running out of ideas now. I will talk to jimmy and see what he says if not I might have to break it and scrap the rest which isn't really how I wanted my first fb project to start :(

Sounds like the donk is ok. Bad tune imo.

Turn the idle stop screw in (NOT THE MIXTURE SCREW) and let us know what it will idle at. Should idle at 1500rpm.

I'll count how many turns ;-)

Did you say turn it all the way in? Wouldn't that lower the idle or am I being stupid? (most probably)

The IDLE STOP SCREW. Not the mixture screw. The one that stops the throttle linkage from closing the butterflies on the primaries. It should be on the firewall side of the carb iirc.

Set the idle much higher then gradually lower it to the lowest point it will idle at. Take it for a run on the motorway to clear it out. If the tune is bad, it will help. Then you can investigate further.

Air leak?
Adjust timing. Mark the location of the lock nut and then move it a mm or 2 either way and see if the idle improves. If you mark it first, you can always put it back to the same location. ;)

Guess work without a timing light. Tippex the e shaft pulley as Steve said and it will stick out like tits.

Keep at it.

Well, some good news (hopefully) :)

I Screwed in the idle stop screw and it idled at about 1500rpm like you said. I managed to lower it down to 1000rpm before it would stall which to me seemed like a bit of an achievement anyway lol. After that I checked the timing with a timing gun and it was out 8 degress. Once it was on the mark the idle lowered to a steady, non spluttery 800rpm.

It's starts up without any throttle intevention as well now :-) I hope that there isn't anything else to do cause my brain hurts now lol.

MOT time now haha!

If there is anything that I should check or do then please let me know because even if it causes more problems I want it to be right in the end :)

Thanks everyone for the help and for sticking with it W(p

Good news 8-)

Am I right in thinking you said you'd swapped the coils over? and it made an improvement? Then I'd be looking to get a known good second hand coil to replace the one you've found to be weak.
