Glad to hear my car still looks nice, be nicer to hear they'd started hacking it up though

Re: Roxy
So is that a sticking side seal then? Bit unusual to loose compression on just one face, if it was an apex seal it'd be the chambers either side reading low

Re: Roxy
Minor update, put some ATF in and left it over night. Started it up in the street and a c
nt load of smoke came out. It took about 10-15minutes to clear with clouds of it drifting down the street, unreal. As per the advice on the US forums I would do it at night. Then took it for a massive cane to clear it all out and try to clear the engine out.
Unfortunately although is is running better it is still missing, although maybe not as badly... and it one point it seemed to be running at all 6 faces. So either the side seal is still stuck or it is actually broken. Either way it is not right.
Not too sure where to go from here. Could give it another ATF treatment or try the water spray method. Not quite ready to pull the engine yet.

Re: Roxy
Hope the housings are reusable!
While its off, might be worth making a series 5 turbo hybrid - the bits should all fit together, and the whole assembly is easy to rebuild. Just need to get a turbo specialist to balance the lot which can be quite cheap if the unit is already disassembled. I have a T04B comp wheel and cover which is a bit larger than the S5 wheel but should fit up all the same - worth a look into while it is all apart.
If the housings are no good, then I would be looking to install a 13b as it will work out the same cost as trying to find good 12a housings.

Re: Roxy
I have already spoken to CR turbos in portsmouth who can balance up to about 60k rpm about a rebuild / hybrid turbo. I also work with a turbo supplier and was going to see if they could help me out as they have access to all the parts and balancing machines. It would be interesting to see if the components you have will mate up to the center housing as the design is quite old. Will have to catch up again soon once I have the engine in bits.
Hoping the rotor housings are OK, it is a late model engine so fingers crossed. Looking in the exhaust ports the apex seals are all intact so no major damage. Probably get the plates ground flat and might try to get a tall port center housing as mine will likely have the smaller turbo ports. Will go from there as far as ports are concerned.
So far only a few bad things. Having to make a new wastegate flange as the current one is cracked from thermal fatigue. Found it has a exedy heavy duty clutch which is good.

Re: Roxy
I believe the Hitachi and Garrett turbos use common components - rebuild kits between the 2 are identical (front seal dependant though).
The main thing to the hybrid is the compressor wheel, the compressor cover and the backing plate. Not 100% sure on the cover or plate, but pretty sure the shaft is the same diamter and the wheel height is the same so worst case you get your cover (or S5 cover) machined to suit. Depends what power you think you can/want-to make though - the S5 turbo might well be all you need.

I have a set of good useable housings in the garage if need be.RamoNZ wrote:Hope the housings are reusable!
