you using gas with that welding? if not I suggest you get some.. night and day difference... turn the feed down a little.. bacon sizzling is a good sound haha

More welding practice ongoing. I've been trying to do a few hours here and there where I can. I started off with 0.8 wire on a Clarke 145 Turbo then moved onto a Sealey Supermig 180 with 0.6 wire. I'm starting to prefer the 0.6 now I'm getting used to it, one of the beads below was when I switched over and you can see it took me a little while to sort out the power settings. I've still got a ways to go before I'll start thinking about the car but I think I'm getting somewhere. I'm not sure whether to be concerned about the amount of brown residue left after welding - I've been using a flap wheel to get back to bright metal before welding and using CO2/Ar gas but that's how it ends up looking. Almost all of the welds in the picture are butt welds on 0.9mm steel as that's what I'll be using on the car. Any feedback is gratefully received

That is a lot better than me ...well done. I can Arc & I can gas weld no problem, bought a Mig & could not get on with it...............I was convinced it was faulty until a mate borrowed it & said it was fine & showed me his welds

Hey, it's been a while...

The car has been exactly as left in my last post for the last few years - the lift it was on died, leaving the car stuck in the air and I got distracted by work, renovating a flat and loads of other stuff. A few months ago I got the news that we need to leave our current workshop, which gave me the kick in needed to get on with the RX7 again. So I fixed the lift, and got stuck in. A lot of this is just going to be a picture dump as I've got a reasonable bit to catch up on, it seems like the order of the pictures is a bit jumbled up as well. Sorry!

Welding first (I've done a few welding projects since I first looked at this, so was a bit more confident taking this on now):

Re-coned the speakers in the front as I found they were knackered when I removed them to run wiring for the Megasquirt: Got the back end put back together, fitted the fuel tank and made up the pipework: One more welding picture, driver's side finished and in zinc primer:

Right now I'm stripping the engine bay ready for paint and also sorting out brackets for the new radiator and intercooler I've got to go in. Some seriously high-tech fabrication here... What I need to do is make the cowling in front of the radiator a bit wider to accommodate the intercooler, I'll also need to move the battery to make room for the pipework.
I've also had the TII engine I bought rebuilt by GarageREG. Generally the engine wasn't in bad condition, although it had previously been rebuilt with a rotor and housing that had been damaged by an apex seal failure. He's supplied good secondhand parts and the engine is now built and ready to collect, I should be picking it up this week. Lots to do, but it's good to finally be doing something with the car again.

Solid suspension mounts come in handy aye . Nice work! Colum seems like a pretty good fulla. I keep meaning to go and see him as he is just down the road from me. Look forward to more updates
