I haven't checked over it yet but I do know there is one unit connected to the engine bay bulkhead and also the IMU on the gearbox tunnel - so it suggests both are fitted.
As for servicing the 'wastegate' - I would probably win a wager that it has never been serviced as the po might have considered it unnecessary having not reached the magical 6000 milestone, nevertheless I took onboard your earlier recommendations so have this on the 'must do listing'

Over the years, they used 2 different systems:
1. ignition control unit which actively controlled the ignition by retarding the timing and limiting the revs
2. ignition monitor unit which wasn't actually wired into the ignition at all and didn't adjust anything, it just monitored the boost level.
This was because early conversions used a less reliable wastegate system to safeguard the engine and dump any excess boost... in case it failed, the ignition control protected the engine.
Later conversions used a much more reliable swing arm wastegate and elfords decided the ignition control unit was no longer necessary.
the later 'ignition monitor unit' didn't connect through the ignition at all and just provided a light and buzzer if the boost got dangerously high ( due to a stuck waste gate).
If your car has the early, all singing and dancing unit Cliff, it'll be in the engine bay on the bulkhead. If it has a later ignition monitor unit, it'll be in the drivers foot well, fixed to the transmission tunnel. Logic would say that they wouldn't fit a Microtech red coil with the later unit as they don't connect to it but I've seen a few elfords that have both.
Something I would definitely get your mazda guys to do is to service the wastegate, they seize up pretty easily due to the carbon in the manifold. It should be done at each 6000 mile service but I bet most don't get touched these days as the cars have changed hands many times and owners don't know about it or have access to the operation manual ( I sent you a copy, it details it in there, page 4 & 5) If your car has got the later monitor unit, fitted in the drivers footwell, the wastegate is the only protection you have against overboosting.
Crikey Thomas, you slipped that one in mate - must have been whilst I was changing the alloys over, how can I repay you We tend to fly going to Europe (the Dragon prefers Flying) but you never know, might just do that. I'll give you the heads up on it.
I'll look into Air Cleaner positioning, could be better as you have suggested.

That's interesting Cliff. I've never seen an Elford with both ignition modules fitted but I did read somewhere that when Elford upgraded the wastegate from the old 'pop off' type to the new, more reliable 'swing arm' type, quite a few cars went back to Elfords to have the later wastegate fitted in place of the old type. Whether that was a recall or quite who paid for it I don't know but if that happened to your car, that may explain the 2 modules. They may have just left the original module in place and supplemented it with the later monitor unit. Anything in the paperwork to suggest this?

Considering the condition of TOF there actually isn't much documentation to support anything from Elford nor servicing history - this did surprise me. The po has made reference to journeys between 1988 & 1996 but again nothing to specific trips to events or shows - shame really as it would have been nice to have known which events the car has been shown. I have mot certificates between 1996 (12th October @ 2631 miles) through to 2007 (13th November @ 4060 miles) and subsequent SORNS till 2012 but nothing for the earlier years.
Need to have a look round the engine compartment and specifically for the wastegate to determine which type is fitted and maybe this will explain why both units are installed - will keep you posted.

Sure that isn't a Mazda Special Accessory, Part # RET-00034-00-87 (battery spacing auxilliary tray grommet [wood])? Might be a very expensive and OOP genuine article Check it carefully for a part number, then flog it on Ausrotary for $400
