I've seen a couple of Elfords that are running a beehive instead of an air cooled oil cooler, presumably because the air cooled cooler sprung a leak and beehives are cheap and easily available.
Seems a crazy thing to do to me....... introducing turbo heat transfer into a cooling system that was just about marginal in a standard n/a car.

Re: What is the best Oil to use in a Rotary Engine?
Hi All,
Just joined & have been reading all the posts on Oil.
When I used to have NSU Ro80s we used to run them on Shell Rotella 30 or 40 Tractor Oil, it was a Total loss system, I also used it in My Suzuki RE5 (same Rotor as R0 80), DKW W200 but not in the Norton Commander.
At the time it was tested it was found to have the least Ash/residue, the downside was it only came in 20 or 40 Gallon drums!
I was wondering as I use AF 64 & ZX1 in my Piston engine vehicles & 2 Stroke Stihl Farm machinery which seems to work wonders, has anyone tried in there RX7?

Reading this im still not clear about which oil, if you run a 12a without omp then which is the best oil to use.
Things have changed over the years.
Synthetic diesel oil dosnt sound all that bad a sugestion if no omp.
Or modern petrol synthetic oil to cut down on carbon deposits.
Oh on the group B cars castrol was mazda,s sponsor for oil, I think gtx was used.

Re: What is the best Oil to use in a Rotary Engine?
If your not going to us the omp why would you need to stay on a mineral oil?

Re: What is the best Oil to use in a Rotary Engine?
Just reiterating what Mr Tool said here. Mazda recommended it since the beginning. It's a mineral oil, classed as semi synth because it has a small amount of synthetic blended in to help with viscosity and temperature control. I've used GTX in rotaries for more decades than I want to remember.TOOL wrote:Castrol GTX 15-W40 semi synth. End of.

In theory, you don't need to if not using OMP.Gewdraa wrote:If your not going to us the omp why would you need to stay on a mineral oil?
But, if that's what the motor had in it and what the bearings are used to, why change it?
People worry too much about oil in motors imo.
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......
