That'll do.
Only thing worse than fitting an exhaust on stands is dropping the gearbox out of a Yank V8 on them. Think I still have a dent in my chest

Feel your pain, dude

Popped in a saw Uncle Tim earlier and he talked me into doing the direct fire mod with FD coils and going on the fact she wasn't exactly running right anyway I thought I just as well. Turned out to be an easy mod, and within an hour we had this.
Gave it a crank, not feeling too hopeful but alas she fired straight up. Had to turn the idle down as we'd been overcompensating for the air leak we had but all appears a lot better.
The clutch hydro's packed up though......

so what's the advantage then over a stock set up?

It does away with the dizzy cap which eliminates quite so many jumps for the spark which in the case of the trailing is three! It is most definitely a lot happier. Some don't like it as it causes wasted spark but ho hum.

Not worried about wasted spark myself, don't see what harm that can do, but what actually tells the coils when to fire? They still need to fire the right time, what makes this happen without the dizzy?

Am I being excessively stupid and missing something blindingly obvious?

It's only the cap that's rendered jobless Nik, the 'points' remain in situ and still do the job of telling the coil when to fire.
