Sweet, thanks. You around next weekend maybe? Also don't suppose you have a spare carb you'd be willing to part with do you?

Can't do next weekend. Weekend after?
I probably have a spare RX7 carb. Need to check what's on the shelf. They're easy enough to clean up though.

Weekend after sounds good, PM me your number and I'll give you a ring nearer the time.

Today I was hoping to sort one of the dipped beams not working by running all the headlights off relays, which should hopefully give brighter headlights and also decrease wear on the combination switch. Unfortunately I couldn't find the bits I need locally, so that'll have to wait - I'll do a write-up if I remember and if people would find it useful.
Instead, this happened:
We've nearly got the gearbox out to change the slipping clutch, the only reason it's not out is the mate I had helping me had to leave and I didn't fancy it by myself
Another 10 minutes and it's out, I was quite happy to see this inside the bellhousing when I took the starter motor off:
Looks like bits of clutch to me, which would explain why it was barely making contact getting it off the recovery truck but also possibly why it was taken off the road in 1998. Fortunately I have a new clutch ready to go thanks to Ian, I just need to find a release bearing. The slave (and probably master) cylinder also needs a rebuild, am I right in thinking you can use an MX5 rebuild kit?

I can't confirm 100% on the mx5, but I used MX3 clutch internals to refurb and FB one.
I'd guess they are the same based on that though.

Perfect, just bought it on a best offer. Hopefully I'll get the clutch in on the weekend. Looking at it, though, are you sure it's the right bearing for my year (83), or do they just use the same bearing for all models?

It's the same bearing iirc.
I've been meaning to do a clutch comparison with pics for a while.

Thanks, I've ordered it now so fingers crossed. Managed to get a bit more done today, gearbox is out:
Not that bad a job really, it was a lot lighter than I expected. Another nice surprise is that all the oil seems to be coming from the sump gasket, rather than the rear eccentric shaft oil seal. This is good news. The clutch that came out was, as expected, well and truly shagged:
Just waiting on the release bearing and I'll get it all back in, my mate's going to sort out either an old input shaft or turn a tool to get it all centred properly.
