Pretty sure that is how they mount from the factory.
I did mine that way and loads of others have too - though not sure it makes too much difference with the oil being under that much pressure.

Because of the Bypass valve oilflow direction is important

last few details now before the mot....
I've had a right struggle to find someone locally who would make up some oil cooler hoses for me.... I thought that loads of places would be able to do it but most didn't want to know. Eventually found a guy called Chris at Hydraline engineering Ltd in Cannock who was excellent and made me a set up, no problem for £40. He swaged the fittings onto the one end.... also used one of the old genuine Mazda fittings that comes off the front cover at the right angle ..... and then let me take the hoses home to trial fit them to my car, mark up the exact length I needed them to be and the orientation of the banjos.... took them back to him and he cut the hoses to length and swaged the other banjos on.
Proper service from a proper engineering shop.
Here are my new hoses...
and fitted to the car...
Hopefully off to the garage next week for a pre-mot and then a test... it's first in over 20 years.

Nice work!
What was the total length of the lines? Can you post a picture up of the overall install? I have to do exactly this in a few weeks so am keen to see.
