ok, so I put a new strut on the nearside and it holds the glass up no problem, it doesn't lift it though. I think Thomas is right, 2 of these new struts may be too strong for the glass so I'll probably just roll with the one strut on it... at least the bleeding thing won't hit me on the head again.

Ah, I never realised the hatch should completely lift from the release without a touch? I've never had that "luxury"
. I prefer it as it is now, requiring a slight touch to start the lift.
