Hard to see but looks like a dark blue wire with pale blue stripe & brown ring comes down from the loom in the boot and immediately connects in the boot on a single connector to a plain red wire for the last 18" or so down through boot floor to the light.
Mind you it also looks like a red wire to the chassis earth from the foglight so I'm guessing two reds came out of the foglight when Mazda sourced it in originally.

I can't see any reference for this item in the Haynes S2 diagrams in the book. I'll have another look in the book later.

thanks Dave, i've just dug out the dealers technical note for the rear fog light and the feed is a blue wire with a green trace and the other end goes to earth.... I think my problem lies the other end now.... it's driving me mad.

Which end turned out to be the problem Ian? I know that the switch is notoriously unreliable, due to lack of use I guess?

it was a problem of my own making Dave.
I swapped the instrument cluster to add the factory boost gauge to my car and used the printed circuit board off the jdm clock set with the rest of the UK clocks....this was the source of my problem. The JDM clocks don't have a fog light tell tale light in the instrument cluster but instead have an exhaust overheat light and a doors open light which meant that using the jdm pcb with the rest of the UK clocks and dash lights caused chaos.
Whenever I turned the ignition on, the fog light tell tale was on and wouldn't turn off.... if I put the lights on, the tell tale went off..... regardless of what the telltale or the switch was doing, the rear fog didn't light up. Spent ages messing about with the wires to the fog light and checking them but they looked fine.... it then dawned on me that it must be connected with the instrument pcb.... swapped that for a Uk pcb, drilled out some of the tracks on the circuit board to make my boost gauge work and now all is good..... fog light works just as it should.
Next job, get the rear wash wipe working..............................

Insured this car today and then took it over to a private country estate just over the other side of the village..... put 8 miles on it tonight and nothing has leaked, dropped off or overheated today.... so far, so good :D ..... first time it's been road going for 20 years and 22 years for the engine. Just a couple of jobs left to do then it's going for a pre-mot later this week. The carb needs setting up, it bogs down when pulling away but goes really well once it's up on the revs.

sounds great ian, i'm sure it was great to get out for a spin in the car, if only for a short distance off the roads.
i am sure you will fly through. be interesting in october when the new tax rules come into place, no more discs and all done via direct debit, online or via the phone. no more selling a car with road tax as, as soon as you send off the change of ownership, you are meant to tax the car over the phone or online once they get it. it'll be strange and fun no doubt.

well, that went well............. not.
My plans for a pre-mot today have been scuppered... :( :( :(
3 miles into my journey and I lost the brake pedal.... just about had enough pedal left to stop the car. had to nurse it back home so no pre-mot today.
Have a look at it tonight after work if the weather is dry.
