Have had some time to mess around with the RX7 over the last few weeks and have also taken the plunge and had the underside of the car sandblasted. Money well spent I reckon given how much time it would've taken to do it with a wire wheel. Fortunately no rust was found - the guy who did the sandblasting said he couldn't believe how clean it was:

Result! I had the axle, front crossmember and fuel tank blasted as well while he was there:

Today I was working on the fuel tank, stripping the stonechip that the sandblaster wouldn't touch:

Condition of the fuel tank is pretty good, it's a bit thin in places and I've found one pinhole but I think it should be fine after the full POR-15 treatment inside and out:

Finally, I've drilled the holes ready for the new fuel pump setup, which made it easier to get all the rubbish out of the bottom of the tank:

Not a massively exciting update, should have paint on the underside of the car soon - waiting for the next free full day. Also, the paint is supposed to adhere better to light surface rust, so it shouldn't do at any harm to sit exposed for a while.

That is so cool aye haha. Good score with such a small amount of rust! I don't know if I could modify my OEM tank with them being so hard to find over here haha

Wow, that body shell looks stunningly good.
Prices of these cars seem to be going up and up now, so all your effort is going into a good place if you ever come to sell.

Excellent progress, that bodyshell condition is unbelievable!

Liking you plan with in-tank fuel pump.

Looks like some good progress, especially with the underbody work to protect it for the foreseeable. Looking forward to seeing what pump arrangement you go with.

All that hard work work will pay dividends & it will be better than new once coated.....also it will be easy to treat all those little sections/inner rails with some waxoyl type treatment................101010

Tank sealer in after drying the tank for a few hours with a hot air gun (the tank was cleaned/prepped a few days ago):
Image

Hopefully it seals the tank as well as it has been able to seal the ends of my fingers - the fingers of my gloves were torn and I only realised afterwards. This stuff does not come off in a hurry.

It appears to be thick enough to seal the pinholes, so long as it sets alright it should be good to go. This is where it has seeped out a bit, you can see how thin the metal is:

This was only done as I had time between other stuff, still waiting for the big paint day.

Got a few bits painted today, took longer than I thought to get 2 coats on but hopefully will be durable.

Fuel tank and front crossmember:

Axle:

Also started stripping some of the unnecessary bits of the new engine:

I wanted to have a practice with the POR-15 before I do the underside of the car, once it cures on these parts and I'm happy with the adhesion I'll do the car. If it goes wrong, these smaller parts can be taken in for blasting but fingers crossed it'll cure properly.
