So yeah, the mapping. It all started for Matty on Friday evening when he met me at mine as we landed at the same time. I'd been working away all week and he'd had a full day of it in London then trained it straight down to me. There was a few issues to sort before he could hit the road....

Wastegate screamer pipe
Air filter
Solder ground properly from Crank Angle Sensor
General checks
New insulator on alternator

So with that done, it was pushing 8:45pm and Matty got going.

No rest though, back up at 8 and to the workshop at 9 for secondary injector swap and fuel pressure increase - should've been a straightforward job but the injectors were a bitch and wouldn't seal but after 4 attempts and a few O rings later they had it sussed.

From then on it was problem after problem, all niggly things nothing major but part and parcel of building a car - I'll let Ramon or Matty fill you in with that as I wasn't there to know true details but to cut a long story short, she was mapped to 7psi stock gate pressure this time and made 302bhp. Not a bad figure by any means, but that turbo isn't really partying until 15psi so the torque is a bit violent at the moment. I'll get some pictures up later but heres some footage from the day...

Tim put a safe map on the old setup

As far as I'm concerned, mapping to that extent should be a business relationship so if it goes pop then shit happens, you move on. Put a friend in that position and there's more at stake than an engine. Tims great at mapping but a better mate - and when the all too familiar forum mud slinging starts after an engine failure regardless of fault - well that's not something I'd want to put on a friend.

It certainly sounds like good common sense. Unfortunately, in my bitter personal experience, this only 50% works. If something does go wrong you'll be completely on your own. If, for example, you should be unlucky enough for your car to break on the dyno the mapper will shrug and say "well, it's down to the engine builder/ancilliaries/act of God. Nuffink to do wi' me, guv." And the engine builder will say "well, you shouldn't have got it mapped by those monkeys/that ignition you sourced for me to fit musta been duff/it's an act of God. Sorry bout that, fella, tough cheese though innit."

...and there's you, crying into a handful of shattered apex seals with no help from either party. Glad to see this didn't happen and you had one of the most distilled crews of rotary knowledge in the country standing by to watch wha'go on It's not an experience I'd wish on anyone, TBH

Well after all the excitement of turbos, porting and all the other stuff that puts hairs on your chest, it was time to start attacking the massive list of little jobs that needed taking care of. The first was to replace the drivers seat which was in the process of prolapsing with a foamy fountain every time I entered or exited the 7. Luckily the passenger seat in the other black one was pretty good albeit with a torn base so out that came and I swapped over the rear part onto my current one which was pretty mint.

Whilst doing interior tasks, I thought it was about time the ECU got a proper home - and now it doesn't really require access it could be hidden away. Fortunately the blower duct had comically fallen off onto my fiancés feet whilst going on one of our drives that tries to convince her this is a bonafide proper car that would have quite a high chance of getting us home - and this exposed the perfect spot for the ECU.



Job done.

I even put the blower duct back. And got the blowers working for the first time in the ownership of this car. Go me!

So the interior is looking quite respectable now and stock as a rock.




What else?

Oh yeah, refitted the horns and replaced all the worn out and perished exhaust hangers that were ready to throw in the towel. Not a job I'd wish on my worst enemy but it's done now.

She even got new boots.
