Good Luck for today, hope all goes well!
My car developed a whistle that was more notable at low rpm, turned out to be a bad gasket between the manifold and the engine. Found it by spraying a little carb cleaner at all the joints of the intake.
Hope it is something simple....

the car drove well to the meet today but this whistle is driving me nuts..... on the way home, sat in a line of traffic there was a Scimitar GTE in front of me and it was quite amusing to see the bloke driving it keep sticking his head out of his window to try to hear where the whistle was coming from... he thought it was his car.
It's so loud and annoying though and I can't tell where it's coming from..... anyone who heard it today got any ideas?
I don't seem to be losing any boost, there's nothing obvious and when I take the drive belts off, which rules out the alternator and water pump, the noise is still there.
Any thoughts???

Sounds almost exactly like the symptoms I had.... The whistle seemed to be coming from everywhere and no where all at the same time yet I had no other issues with the engine... No power loss or anything and using a stethoscope was no help at all...
Glad the car ran well though! Hope to see some pics of the gathering!

Try the carb cleaner around all the intake bits, turns out my dad's bright idea while passing by despite his complete lack of interest in anything cars works really well. My leak was so small the car cleaner didn't even make the revs drop but the liquid getting sucked into the leak brought instant and happy silence from the squealing.

This ear piercing whistle is still proving difficult to diagnose....
I have determined that it is something to do with the induction side of things..... a whistle has got to be caused by air leaking past a gasket or seal right?
It doesn't happen until the engine is warm
it only happens at idle or falling revs
with power on and rising revs, it subsides
Tonight, I disconnected the vac pipe from the compressor where it connected onto the waste gate and after about 20 seconds, the whistle disappeared but when I put my finger over the end of the pipe, the whistle immediately came back and then took another 20 seconds to subside again.
What can this be? I'm totally mystified by it and can't use the car with it like this.... frustrating ain't the word.

sounds like a pressure related issue then. did you try the spray and see if anything being sucked in or bubbles?
sure you didn't leave the kettle on top of the engine?

no, I'm reluctant to spray anything onto the engine while it's so hot

well as metals expand then must be a gasket not sealing correctly as the engine warms up.
it wouldn't be a slight vibration somewhere in that induction area which goes away as you rev more?
i don't know tbh, if you can wrap something round the area like the stuff you used for your power steering pipes to protect from the turbo
to try and narrow it down more.
i seen a lovely red s3 on a jap car auction site today a 12a turbo. with those mini lite type alloys, recognised the orange turbo bit lol.
they were asking about 8700 quid, suppose for a 1984 it was worth it as the body looked fantastic.
hope you find the area ian and get it sorted.
