Rx7 Alternator Cross Reference and Swap Chart

Rx-7 Alternator Cross Reference and Swap Chart

This thread shows the interchangeability of RX7 alternators....

UK model S1, S2, S3 cars, the US spec GSL-SE, and 2nd generation S4 (1986-1988) have alternators that use the 'LR 'charging system and change easily, later alts use the 'LS' system and require a rewire of the alternators wiring circuit and aren't worth the hassle of modifying to fit a 1st gen car.
The alternators that fit the 1st gens that are basically 'plug & play' are:

N221

N249

N304

N326

Pictures of various Rx7 alternators across all generations...

Series 3 N249 55 Amp

GSL-SE N304 60 Amp

Series 4 '86-'88 n/a N326 70 Amp

The following alternators are from later model RX7's... the use a different charging system and have a different connector....
They can be discounted really for use in a 1st gen RX7...

Series 5 '91 n/a N350 80 Amp

'91 Turbo N370 80 Amp

3rd gen N3A1 100 Amp

After series 4, they use a different connector plug to the white plug found on 1st gens....

S1's share the same alternator setups as earlier rotors so have an external regulator. To run a later alternator on an S1 you have to delete the regulator and alter the wiring a bit. Will post a diagram..........
