Hi all,

I am concerned that the temperature gauge is not working in Helen's Babe. I purchased an infra red temperature monitor today. I saw on ausrotarys that good temperature for N/A 12A to be running at is 80C. Does that sound right?

Reason for the concern is that now we have rebuilt the car there is a lot of heat coming through the transmission tunnel. I assume? that is coming from the gearbox? Any thoughts?

Any advise is welcome. Thanks.

Heat from tunnel might be exhaust heat......the heat shields were factory fitted above the exhaust.

80 C sounds OK to me.....I've never thought about what it means temperature-wise in the middle of the gauge......with a pressurised system you can get up above 100 C without boiling of course, so mid gauge, 80 C ....Yeh I suppose. Anybody else?

Stock thermostat temp is 82c so it should be hovering around that + a bit, 85-90c I would expect.

Heat on trans tunnel is exhaust for sure, if you have bumped out the power then it will make more heat - have you fitted extractors?

With the stock thermostat, I was getting about 79-80°C (according to Megasquirt) while on the move, which would slowly ride in traffic till the fan cut in around 86°C. With a good clean cooling system, in anything other than hot summers days then the thermostat should only just be cracking open and letting in nice cold radiator coolant so it should stay near the low end of the thermostat temp rating.

I will keep an eye on the temperatures anyway as now pretty sure the temperature gauge inside is U/S. Thanks for the advise about the exhaust heat - RamoNZ has got it when the 13B was replace by the 12A they fitted extractors that were not on it before. I will have to check if the exhaust sheilding was put in correctly or at all.

Try wrapping the exhaust with a thermal wrap. that should reduce heat on the trans tunnel.

Thanks. I just had the engine rebuilt due to small oil leak (on another post) now will finish off the exhaust etc.
