trying to get it started

I bought my first rotary 2 days ago. It sat for a long time before the previous owner bought it. They tinkered with it but never got it running. There is no fuel in the carburetor (accelerator pump is dry, if it has one). The after market fuel pump would not run with the key on. I hooked power to it directly and it still wouldnt run. The hard plastic fuel filter is turning rubbery and is full of rotten stinky gas. Will be draining the tank and blowing compressed air through the lines. I read somewhere that the fuel pump will not run unless the engine is running? I think I better get a manual. And a new fuel pump & filter.

Hey mate,
See how you go. You might need the tank Reno ed, opened and cleaned professionally. They're hard to clean properly.
The carb may also need to be removed, stripped and cleaned.
How long has it been sitting?

UK cars don't need engine actually running for the fuel pump.

The pumps operates as soon as the key is turned to ignition. So you could check the feed at the connector. (Under the rear seat cushion on ours - just pull it out).
