Wiper Arms

Post by KiwiDave »

Has anyone investigated changing or modifying the wiper arms to the hook type fitment? It's becoming increasingly difficult to find good blades that will still accomodate our pin type arms, particularly if you want to go longer than 17 inches (and don't we all)? :D

I recently tried a pair of flexi blades that accept a pin fitment. Unfortunately, the plastic blade body is thicker than its metal equivalent so while the pin does fit, it is no longer centralised and therefore does not lock onto the spring retainer. It's only a matter of a few mm and I guess if one was handy with a dremel then you could modify the pin but that then again, I don't have a dremel anyway.

Has anyone tried MK1 MX5 arms or come up with a solution?

I am looking at modifying the ones on mine Dave and combining them with a Bmw 3 series arm will report back when I have sorted it. IIRC the mx5 ones are far different to RX ones.

For what it's worth, I just tried a set of FC arms on mine.

They seemed to fit pretty good, spline and taper are the same as the nut locked them in place.

Only problem was the FC wiper was an inch too long, passenger side hits the offside trim and drivers hits the roof - a shoter blade would fix that though. Caveat is that I've not run them, only had them static.

You have to ditch the black bolt cap covers but the FCs have a nice black domed nut that goes it it's place.

The usually reliable parts source which is EBay is not exactly a goldmine for FC wiper arms :(

I'm sure you explained this to me once before? Sounds like an interesting plan :)
