Taiga's 7

If you read my intro thread, then you know I bought this ugly pile for 600$. I went to the owners house only knowing that it will need to be painted and that there is something wrong with the engine. After talking to the dude for a while it turns out that it overheated. The previous owner already started the removal process for the engine and the wiring harness was everywhere! I even had a hard time tracking down the cables for the battery.

Anyways, the car turned out to be a 1985 gsl-se. Awesome!!!

The wheels are ugly and are "By BBS" and are 16", in my opinion that is a little large, I'm a fan of 15's. So they will eventually need to go! It also has some random blue lowering springs which dropped the car too low in the front causing the tires to rub on full lock. I'll probably end up buying Racing Beats lowering springs and use Tokico Illuminas.

This is when I first picked it up

The car is super dirty, I had pulled most the engine harness and started getting ready to pull it out. Dirty engine bay pic for reference.

One side all nice and clean.

At this point, nothing is holding the engine in aside from the sub frame and trans brace. Also all cleaned up.

Just a random picture

Picked these bad boys up. I will be doing the booster and Master swap as well. I'm going to do the 4 piston swap according to this guy's instructions. http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/4lug4potbrakes.htm

Front end torn apart. I still have a lot of sanding to do. Right now I'm focusing on getting it ready for paint before it gets too cold out. I chose a gloss black single stage from Space Age Paint and Body supply.

The race seat I had left over from my last project and the steering wheel and pedals I picked up from "Up Garage" when I was in Japan. The wheel is very rough, but for 5$ I couldn't expect any less. The dash is in piss poor condition, I literally ended up tearing the material off the dash. I might take it all off and leave it or cover it with some fabric. Or! I might just buy a new dash, who knows.

These just came in too! Excitement intensifies!

Thank you!! I was going to take pics tonight, but all I did was finish sanding (for the most part) the fenders and took them off. I also forgot I have a paper due tomorrow haha.

Much like the Miata I had, the headlight covers are a M*(@$^@$$@er to get off lol. I ended up leaving them on because the bushings for the headlight motors are still in great shape. I don't want to risk messing them up. My buddies and my previous Miata had messed up bushings and I felt bad every time I got behind another driver at night. So I spent a good 5 solid minutes with a combination wrench slowly getting the bolt under the headlight covers off that was holding the fender on.

Hi, welcome in and wowzers, serious first post lol! Good work

Funny you should say it, I was just replacing the headlights on my '7 and thinking "I wish Mazda had stuck with this design instead of the lash-up they put on the FD" . So much easier and more straightforward. Just the screws rust-seize if you don't grease them

Thank you! I had recently moved into the storage unit I'm working in and didn't bring any penetrating oil with me or I would have attempted to get them off lol. I really don't feel like buying screw extractors if I don't have to

Hi and welcome,

bodyshell seems in good condition, no rust between top of the frame and middle of the wheel house passenger side.
Not afraid about 16 " wheel. I test 5,5x13",6x14",7x15" and in the moment 9x16" tire are porsche 911 standart size 205x55 front 225x50 rear and i like them so much. Whats about the ZG flares? You need deep dish wheel to fill them out! :) Wondering there is no cruise control equipment in the GSL SE ?
Nice to have you on board!
Thomas (i like high resolution pics) ;)

There are some problems with the body, there is some body filler on it too. The rear quarter passenger side and on the bottom of the drivers fender. It is still very solid though so I'll leave it alone.

I have already pulled the cruise control stuff.

I plan on buying some wide wheels for it. I haven't looked into tire size, offset, or width yet though. I'm going to stay with knock off wheels for the cheap factor. This will be driven daily. However the only sizes I can really find are 15x9 and 15x8. The offset ranges from et0-et+15 I think. I'll have to double check.

Thank you for the welcome! Everyone here is very welcoming, it is nice compared to the other forums I've been on haha. I love my phone, the galaxy s5 takes fantastic pictures!

Thank you hobbawobba!

So what's the end goal for this car?

That is a good question. I plan to make it into a daily and to use as an occasional track car. A 302 swap is in the not so distant future.
