Giuliettaevo

Post by giuliettaevo »

Hello,

My name is Remco and I'm from the Netherlands.

Last week i've bought a very mint rx7 from 1982. Only problem it has is a blown engine...

I'm now looking into an engine swap. I love the shape of the car but these wankel engines are not really my cup of tea.

My automotive history is full of alfa's with bigger engines and other alterations. Currently I'm building a 1974 giulia to be my daily driver. I've converted it from solid rear axle to irs and fitted a 2.4 jtd engine in it. Mechanics are 90% done now. Just needs some adapters for the brakes. Then some bodywork and some smaller jobs to finish it. I also have an alfetta gtv coupe that's getting an audi V8 engine from an 1998 S8. It will also get a lot of suspension changes and other stuff done to it. But No spoilers and stuff. ;) i love sleeper cars.

Since i've got another audi V8 engine lying around i might have a go at making that fit the rx7. easy 300bhp, reasonable fuel consumption compared to a rotor engine and a not to bad sound too.

Looking forward to picking you guys brains with questions. Hope you don't hate me too much for the swap...

Greetings Remco

Hi Remco. Welcome.
Most of the people on here will say keep a rotary engine in your FB.
But they're all good guys and will help anyway they can no matter what engine's going in.....No hate on here.

Me....I'm a purist.....keep everything standard...but I do know that 12A engines are getting harder to find in a good state....So 'A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do' to keep rolling.

Cheers

Welcome along!

I'll second the fact most will want you to keep a rotary in there ( me included). But I think if its your car you have to do what makes is fun and interesting to you personally. Otherwise Whats the point?

I'm sure you'll get plenty of help on here if people know the answer and there's a couple of knowledgeable folk.

Enjoy your car, ask queations and post pictures 0-0

And the problem with the engine...

Some excessive oil smoke  oil injection issue?

Car itself is in a very good condition. Imported from the States in the nineties and kept in a garage means very little to no rust.

Since I believe the rotors run 'outside' of the sump (not in splash like a piston engine) and the lubrication is via the oil metering pump I would suspect the pump has gone crazy????? Fairly easy to change this or blank it off and use premix instead. Does the engine make noises, does it pull properly on the road?
Has it been stored with oil squirted into the rotors.....needs to burn it off?
Is the fuel heavily mixed with oil? You only need to use ordinary unleaded fuel if the OMP (pump) is working.

Any one else comment?

Goede dag Remco...welkom,
Nice looking car.
It could just be a sticky seal so do not write the engine off yet!
I would stay with a rotary engine otherwise you will lose the character of the car & would be better buying a MX5, my thoughts, but it is your car so do as you feel,

The OMP wired full open won't do this. I had my old one full open no issues.

Someone has added too much oil to the fuel and it's settled out or, more likely, added oil directly to the engine. It's now sitting in the exhaust and slowly burning off.
You need to go for a run on the open road to get it hot enough to burn off.

If it still smokes when you get back home the oil control rings and/or bit ons have gone and it needs a full rebuild.
Does it use lots of oil?
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......

Bought the car like this... So i only have the previous owner's word on it.

No pre-mixed fuel or added oil in it. Engine lacks power i think, probably fouling plugs. Engine started smoking like this while driving. Owner put it aside after that.

Engine is sold to someone my friend knows. Will ask him to let me know what he finds.
