Hi there, i have a problem with my fuel gauge. Its stopped working. I am unsure if it would be the dash gauge or something in the fuel tank.
Any ideas or recommendations on how to fix or track down new parts?
On the other hand has anyone replaced the fuel tank and interior parts with new ones? I have seen pictures of a tank that fits into your spare wheel hole in the boot!

first thing to do Dave is to find out if it's the gauge /wiring or the sender.... sometimes it's just a bad connection at the plug where it plugs onto the sender.
If you look behind the nearside rear wheel there's a plastic cover.... reach up behind it just on top of the tank and you will feel the connector plug.... unplug it, short out the wires that run to it and turn your ignition on. With the wire shorted out, the gauge should rise to 'full'. If it does then your problem is either a dodgy connection at this plug ( clean up the contacts in the plug and on the sender) or else it's the sender itself.
It is possible to get the sender out without dropping the fuel tank but it's a sod of a job and it's easier to drop the tank if the sender has to come out.... check the easy stuff first though

Yeah the senders on these cars get a bitch sketchy aye haha. Mine only goes up to halfway and slowly makes its way down. i should sort it out really . Start with the easy things like Ian mentioned

Driving my car the other week and the gauge seemed to jumo into life and start actually reading correctly! I haven't driven a whole lot so can't say for sure. It'd be nice though after these few years of it not working

When these fuel sender sit unused, the in-tank part can corrode. But when used regularly with emptying and filling the tank the connections rub through again and start reading properly.

Just keep an eye on the miles you do and fill up regularly, it wil keep the inside of your tank happy too.

one of the jobs of mine to do over the winter is drop the tank in my white car and get the gauge working

I think that has been the case aye. Although it's taken it's time with cleaning its self up!
