Pop-up headlight issue

Hi All, long time no speak!

I'm finally getting Rexanne back up and on the road. Preparing for the MoT today though, I think I made a boo-boo...

One of the headlights was 'winking' every time I turned the lights on or off - raising and lowering repeatedly before finally settlin' in the desired position. Easy, I thought; I swapped the relays over and the problem occurred on the opposite side. So I figured a replacement relay was needed. 8-)

Here's where it turns South though...

I found a 5-pin Nippondenso relay in the garage that looked similar to the old one. It had a different part number (056700-8830 versus the 056700-5950 stocker), but what's the WORST that could happen right??!

Well, the answer is that I now have a headlight motor that won't go up OR down, even with the "good" relay in it. What have I fried? I tested the motor itself works by jumping across from the Red/White wire on the motor (12v perm) to the White wire, so I'm guessing it must be some wiring or something? The other headlight goes up and down perfectly, as designed. (The headlight itself also switches on and off, it just doesn't 'pop up'.)

Separately, does anyone have a cheaper source of the headlight motor relays (part #056700-8950 / FB01-51-663)? I found a seller on eBay but he's after £30 for a second hand unit.

NB I manually fixed the headlights in the 'up' position, so I'm still OK the MoT.

it's unusual for a headlight relay to go wrong... you've been a bit unlucky

Hi All,

So tonight I figured out the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual... It now seems likely that I toasted something in the headlight motor, as the wiring / switching all works fine as per the manual. (i.e. Red wire gets 12v for "up" position / Red/yellow gets 12v for "down).

I believe there's a diode in headlight motor, and also an internal switch. I'm thinking I probably blew out the diode. Before I take the motor out and tear into it, does anyone know the spec of the diode, so I can get another one ordered and soldered in? Failing that I'll be looking for a whole new RH headlight motor.

is it possible to get a 12v supply to the motor to see if it works.... the motor only operates in one direction so if it turns when it sees 12v you'll know the motor itself is ok..... you've probably read this thread from when I had headlight problems, if not take a look, it tells you what the trigger wiring does...

Yep, the motor itself is OK and rotates when jumping 12v over it - it's just the "up" triggering that seems to be buggered.
