MAZ 1987

After 9 years without an RX7, I've bitten the bullet and bought another one. And all because i recognised a series 2 wheel poking out from under a groundsheet on my way to work.

Its coming home this weekend. I fired it up for the first time in 18 months last weekend. All it needed was a jump start! Bodywork looks a bit 'green' but is in very good condition, and the chassis is rust free!!! :o Its been stored with the windscreen and rear quarter lights removed, ready for a respray, so it is a tad damp inside, to say the least. But no real damage.

Thanks to ian and codge for the background on the car as it appears to have a litle history.

Welcome to the forum Paul......... a bit of turtlewax and some t-cut and it'll be as good as new!
My silver s3 had been off the road for 20 years when I got it and the interior was a bit damp and mildewy but after I took the interior out and shampood it with the vax it came up lovely.
Plenty of love on here for the s2's!
good luck with getting it home

cheers,
Ian

Well done on saving another fb, and an S2 :)
Where are you based? There is always a willing helper nearby.

You could probably get a bit of coin for that plate from some fc enthusiast.

Looking forward to seeing it back on the road.

Hello :)

It's always amazing how often these old FBs just fire right up after being sat for years! Keep us updated with plenty of pictures as you progress, I bet just a wash will make a hell of a difference to how it looks!

We only have to trailer it a whole 12 miles. And its free delivery. :D The car was bought by a classic car restorer at Newhaven, Derbyshire, before he was snowed under with customer work. So it took a back seat until I happened along.

I'm all stocked up on polish thanks to Halfords BOGOF over the Easter weekend. And when I said the interior was a 'tad' damp, I meant fish could live in there. The interior's going to be stripped out and dried for a few weeks before i start cleaning it. One tip I learnt years ago on car upholstery; get it dry and give it a really good brushing before trying the shampoo, otherwise it just washes the dirt deeper in. My 3 year old daughter's ready with the brush. The plastics have held up well though, with none of the deterioration my series 1 suffered. I'll have to wait and see how the switches have fared in their waterlogged state.

I'm based up in the High Peak, Derbyshire. I've had the plate valued out of interest, and its worth more than 5 times what I paid for the car. It'll be staying with the car though, as it was first registered in June 1987, so it fits the car. Its also how it appeared in Classic Cars magazine back in February '98 (thanks again to ian and codge). Its a pity my last car rotted away. It lived on the south coast before I had it, and suffered terminal rust which I held back for 10 years. I eventually sold it for the engine and gearbox (the engine was rebuilt by RXmotors) to someone who'd bought an RX with a V8 stuck in it and wanted to return it to original. That engine also fired first time after 18months!

Roll on Sunday!

Welcome along and wow, what a find! That second pic is hillarious, looks like something out of some American-hillbillies-eat-people sort of movie :o Best of luck with the restoration, you certainly have the roads to enjoy a good FB up there

Welcome Paul and good luck with the restoratation. I find it quite amazing how many of these cars are left too one side and forgotten about especially as they just fire up after years of non use :o . Its quite lucky the windscreen is out before you start restoring it as these are a nightmare and 9.5 times out of 10 crack on removal. Looking forward to the progress
