Opening lights

Post by Lucky »

Anyone ever split open a set of tail lights before? On the FD ones you just take out the several screws and heat up the glue gunge and pry the lens off the bulbholder, but the FB ones seem to have little tangs that sit in the lens-back. Just wondering if anyone's had any experience of this before, I'd like to think I could get them back together again afterwards without having mullered too many vital mounting points lol

What are you trying to do dude? I've seen a guy separate a set on the US site to convert them to fully clear which looked pretty good. I'd guess that'd only suit certain colour cars...

From memory, he had a right ballache doing it. I've got a spare set here if they go twang though. 8-)

Pretty much this, lol. With the probable addition of LEDs  I've got a set Keith kindly donated, so it won't be a disaster if they do get ruined but obviously I'd prefer not to murder a perfectly good set of lights. Might have to just attack and see how it goes, not sure I can face searching through five zillion rx-7club threads

Maybe borrow the wife's oven and give them a good heating to start with. Exile-style, lol. Shhhh, don't tell her ;)

If you're warming them up to break down the adhesive, bear in mind the casings will probably melt at around 90 deg C

Stick the oven on 85, and leave them a while, the glue will soften, and the lights will still be light shaped

Yeah that's what the guy did from memory, also with LEDs. Make sure they also go in the dishwasher for double point bonus.
