Elford turbo question

Post by Marc S »

I may be being very dumb here, so bear with me...

I have been offered an Elford turbo unit and inlet manifold :D

I assume the car will take the turbo, and won't need a new ecu or any other newfangled technology...

but what else will I need? will it run with the same carb (i have a standard set up, minus the air pump etc)? I'm at a bit of a loss here - I don't want to buy it, and never get the rest of the bits to be able to use it :?

I am going to look at it on Saturday, and I know to look for play in the bearing etc...but I have no idea what else it needs to get it running

any help would be greatly appreciated - vyv really needs some boost

Marc,

unless it's a complete setup, I'd give it a miss, missing parts are very very hard to find and improvising isn't really a viable option. It uses a SU HIF44 carb modified for a draw through operation, you would need to ditch the Nikki carb currently on your car.

Have a read of this thread about a system that was on ebay a couple of years back......... I know who bought it and it never got used as far as I know.

Also, check out my build threads for my silver Elford and my old black car, you will then see the parts needed.

Basically, you need the exhaust manifold, turbo, wastegate, downpipe, oil return pipe, Elford modified sump with oil return, inlet manifold, oil drain pipe, carb mounting block, carb, throttle linkage, oil metering pump rod, pressure switches on mounting block, ignition retard system and the ignition monitoring module.

you can get away without the ignition monitoring module, I can tell you how to make up an ignition retard system, you can probably get a HIF44 carb of ebay but the carb mounting block and the Elford oil return to the sump are the deal breakers really.... if you don't have them then it's a real up hill battle and not really worth bothering with.

Hmmm...

Thanks Ian, you are, as always, a star W(p

I'll give him a call tomorrow and get the full details on what's there, but I think it's just the turbo and inlet manifold :( Could be wrong though, so definitely worth following up I'd say.

Looks like I'll have to settle for boost in my diesel

If I'm honest, in all the busyness of last week, I forgot to go over...but I'll call him this weekend and arrange a good time to go and see it all, and I'll report back with my findings :)
