Which US models had power steering

Post by ian65 »

Do any of our US based members know which US models came with power steering...... was it only the ones with the facelifted dash or did the ones with the earlier
style of dash and clocks like this have PAS?

I'm sure a US'er will come along to confirm, but from the research I have done it would appear not.

The JDM 12at has PAS as you know, and that was only introduced in the Series 3, though the engine was available beforehand in the Cosmo/Luce.

Are you having issues or just curious Ian?

the 1st gen PAS, as with the PAS on a FC, is speed sensitive and the speed signal originates in the instrument cluster, specifically the speedo...... you can see the speed sensor here...

the car that this PAS setup came off was a JDM 12AT so the speedo was calibrated in KMH and I had to convert if to MPH which involved swapping the speed sensor bit onto a spare MPH speedo...... whether this will work I don't know and I was basically hedging my bets by thinking that I could perhaps buy an old style cluster from the US, calibrated in KMH but with the speed sensor built in.

I wonder if the GSLSE speedo guts would fit in? Maybe someone has a photo similar to yours to compare? Long shot but they may well share internals even if the externals are different...

that's a good call mate..... I suppose it's too much to hope that they just changed the faceplate but who knows.... I might have to buy one to dissect it

For what it's worth, you might be able to pick one up or get a picture from one in Euroland - maybe multi rotor can help?

It'll be calibrated in KM like yours but at least you might save having to post one in from the US.

what do you need Ian? I have a spare s3 cluster that has sun damage to the faces, so if you need i can open it up and check the speedo. I do know that PAS was optional on s2 & s3 GS trim and above, and that every US bound car was wired for it (dealers installed most options)

went out and removed speedo from S3 cluster, took pics if ya need, but they are different. Looks like the speedo has a "pulse generator" (2 wire) on the input of the cable, which after following on the cluster board and using a schematic feeds both p/s and an extra board thats not in my 5 Speed cluster...the extra board is for the auto trans (board has 3 connection points in a row and mounts inside the cluster below the tach and feeds the "O/D" light) 0-0

thanks Michael, I'd love to see those pics...... they'd really help me to either discount the idea or see if I could use a US Market cluster th:
