Book recommedations

I got a 1980 RX-7 earlier this summer that ran mostly OK when warmed up. After a few weeks of casual driving it began to have a few issues. The engine would die occasionally when coasting to a stop in neutral, but would start up right away with no problems. Also it would flood out when cranking and wouldn't start in the morning. Removing and cleaning the spark plugs and a little shot or starting fluid and it would start up. After the third time this happened I decided it was time to rebuild the carb. After re-installing the carb, engine does not start. I am new to rotaries and carburetors. I am a very competent mechanic but I am only 29 so I have never had to service a carbed engine and most of my experience is at Subaru dealership. Can anyone recommend good books on the subject of rotary engines and Nikki carbs. I need to thoroughly educate myself on the subject before I make anymore repair attempts. Thanks.

The first book you should get is Street Rotary. It covers everything about the engine. It's a must have imo.

As far as the Nikki goes, you'll have to look online for info or get a copy of a Haynes manual for an FB.

They can be quite troublesome. I'm currently trying to work out a lack of fuel on coasting myself lol. The choke system compensates for it so I'm not sure where it's coming from.
I had no trouble to strip it down and rebuild it and it works great, just this little issue and it seems hard to pin down. I might start a thread.

it's not often I disagree with Mr Tool but.....

the 1st books any rx7 owner intending to maintain their car should buy are the Haynes workshop manual...



and the Clymer shop manual...



both are based partly on a full stripdown and partly on the factory workshop manual and cover everything you need to know about maintaining and repairing your 1st gen...... they both include sections for fault finding/trouble shooting and both are available from Ebay and Amazon.

The factory workshop manuals are also available to buy on ebay or you can download a digital copy in the library section of this forum.

If you want to improve the performance / handling / just about everything else of you 1st gen then Tools favourite book, Street Rotary is the book to buy.

I bought a copy of this 20 years ago and have read the print off it...... excellent book for anyone who's looking for their first RX7 or has just bought one.... not a technical book, more of a buyers guide etc.

Find threads from a guy called Stirling on the US site.....RX7 dot com isn't it?

He is the man and his Nikki threads are superb.

Flooding in the morning could be just overchoking in the summer? I think you have to have lived with a manual choke for a year or two to be able to really hit the correct spot every time for the season of year.

Plus if the engine's cold (even in summer) you have to just tweak the choke at traffic lights etc to stop it dying. That's until the engine heat has risen slightly when things settle down.

All normal things unless it's really being a pig.

Pffffffff Haynes I still mentioned Haynes so it's all good.

Street rotary is the shizzle though.

That Sterling guy doesn't seem to do the carbs any more from what I read a while ago too. He used to mod them. His website is down as well.
