Cheers for all the offers of help!
Reckon it will be a few weeks before I get it apart but will post up pics. The goal is 200hp but will see how it goes. Planning on spending a bit of time getting the bay tidy and doing a careful rebuild cleaning it all up.

I got those on the Silver S2 back home - they do look good!
Never seen them here before so as that auction is only for 3 wheels it might be tricky to track down a 4th.

A long time no see update on the elford...
Picked up a 'runner' 12a on the weekend so hoping to have the car back on the road for summer. Its from a 1982 car so will have a few differences. Its a bit of an unknown but started easily, ran smoothly and did not smoke so should suffice for a while. The new engine was also running an air to oil cooler rather than the beehive that I had on the 12aturbo block. Got a list of bits still needed so if anyone has anything let me now. Parts as below:
- Oil cooler (stock S4 type) as the one on the engine has seen better days
- Oil cooler hoses, ideally braided, or a recommendation on where to get some from
- Turbo oil feed pipe, I think the elford had a fitting that went into the block feed banjo, fairly simple to make up but a good clear photo would help
- Turbo oil drain + elford separator, the turbo engine drained into the front iron so I do not have the separator, current plan is to cut a hole in the front cover and weld / fix in a drain point there as this is a better option than draining into the sump below the water line (so to speak)
- Clutch, I had a nearly new clutch on my engine but I believe the S2 is smaller diameter so will pick one of these up likely from ebay unless anyone can recommend something better, the box needs all the seals and the clutch release bearing replacing also
- Turbo!
Mine had a bit of seal go though it so needs a rebuild or replacement, I want to keep it stock looking so will have to stay T3 style, will likely get the current unit rebuilt as I think finding a replacement is unlikely
If anyone can think of any issues I may not have thought of please let me know. I 'think' it should all bolt up to my gearbox etc. I am not sure if the distributor is different between the engines?
On the plus side the engine came with a set of N/A headers that look fairly decent diameter and in reasonable condition into a three bolt flange on the outlet (standard attachment?) and also came with the standard nikki carb and inlet manifold so if anyone is in need of these bits I am of course open to reasonable offers.

Hi mate,
I'm after a known good carb so I'll happily take that off your hands and the headers too - perhaps we can do a swap with some bits that you need?
The turbo feed on the Elford was a take off from the pressure sender if I recall correctly from Ian telling me, drain is easy to make - I have loads of T2 and normal turbo bits.
Turbo is a Garrett, also used on the SAAB 99 - also very scarce. I would suggest upgrading the turbo to something more modern with an internal wastegate - they recommended servicing the original thing every few thousand miles and it would be a bugger if it failed while driving. Just block the old one off and have less things to go wrong.
Drill and tap front cover for sure - just like original 12at.
Clutch - i'm sure someone can clarify but I think the larger clutch plate fits on the smaller flywheel...? There was only 5mm radius difference after all, but failing that the Elfords were available on the S2s and used a standard clutch - Spline is the same. Release bearing is well worth doing though.
Distributor is different for the 12aT but no idea if they used that or a stock one.

The feed came of the oil gallery at the bottom of the rear plate which also feeds your oil cooler...RamoNZ wrote:

and you need one of these so you can spur off for the oil feed to the turbo....

check your flywheel Tim because a lot have been swapped between engines these days..... a 225mm series 3 clutch won't fit onto a series 2 fly, you definitely need a 215mm clutch.... the good news is you can get them very cheap off ebay.... £20 for the clutch cover ... this type of thing...RamoNZ wrote:Clutch - i'm sure someone can clarify but I think the larger clutch plate fits on the smaller flywheel...? and you can sometimes get a new friction plate for a tenner. Ramon is right about a s2 clutch being up to the job..... Elfords never upgraded the clutch and my old Elford, although a series 3 car, had a s2 engine in it running a 215mm clutch.... no problems whatsoever.
The Elford turbo used a stock dizzy with a solenoid linked to a pressure switch with truned off the automatic advance once it detected boost.... dunno which one your car has but it's probably the stock dizzy.... do you have this solenoid fitted to retard the ignition? The dizzy on the 12at has a weird rotor with three points per arm (four arms in total of course). I think it is like a budget MSD ignition. Should be able to get out into the garage tomorrow night so will take some photos and post up the info. Not sure if the standard 12a is the same. I have the solenoid that connects to the vacuum lines that should stop the advance on boost. Does this also connect to the ECU or it is as simple as shutting off the advance under boost?

from experience the easiest place to grab an oil feed for a turbo is to either a) get a sandwich plate for the oil filter b) put a FD oil filter setup and use a speedflow -10an with a 1/8npt in the side of it.
do not drill and tap the front plate as the will crack - know this from previous experience - what doesnt help is when its drilled and tapped on the piss into the copper bung...
As a good upgrade to the elford setup a stock s5 turbo would be a good upgrade ( i have one for sale if you are looking ) - i have seen a stock 12a with one on 12psi make just over 200 rwhp with a custom inlet and fuel injection. if you are looking for a fuel injection setup you could alway look for a mt4 microtech for fuel only purposes and use the 12at dizzy for ignition.
