Re: 1984 silver series 3 ... off the road since 1992

Post by ian65 »

Has it really been 8 months since I posted on this thread...... how time flies when you're building a garage :(
Got a question......
the power steering lines from the steering box on this car run parallel to the chassis rail towards the front of the car and then connect to the control valve which is bolts via a bracket to the chassis rail.....
Unfortunately, the control valve is in the way of the oil return pipe from the turbo..... it's a big heavy braided line on the Elford and connects to the anti-froth device on the side of the sump..... the angle it's at sends it straight at the control valve. The easiest fix is to move the control valve but to do this, I need to extend the power steering hard lines from the steering box....
Does anyone know if a standard brake flairing kit will flair a large diameter pipe, as seen in these photos?

if a standard kit won't do it, any ideas what will?

My sykes flaring tool will do upto 12mm.
Have you got any idea of wall thickness of the pipe ?

You might be able to get flexi pipes made up that fit both ends.

I don't know what the wall thickness is...... I'll try and measure it....... I only actually need the 1 line...... the other 1 is already a flexible with clips each end so I can extend that..... this is the one that I need to extend..... I think this is the high pressure line.... dunno if I can use a flexible in lieu of this?

Could be over 1000psi in that pipe, you can get hose that will cover that.
I will have a look at the info in my flaring tool and get back to you in a bit.

incredibly, upon opening the curtains this morning, a strange yellow thing was in the sky, something not seen for a long long time.............
Yep, the sun was shining and just for once, it was a nice warm day so for the first time in 9 months, I got my fb into the sunshine to air it out....

It'll be going into my new garage soon to get it up and running.
