New member with 1981 GS

Post by gregupstateny »

Hello everyone. I just joined the forum and understand that new members are to introduce themselves. Here goes. When I met the woman who would become my wife, she had a 1983 Mazda RX7 GSL. It was blue and we used it regularly and were careful to store it over the winter so it never saw snow or salt. After we had our first child, we sold the car and now that our sons are grown, I've been keeping an eye out for RX7s. Last week we found a fairly local 1981 GS that was for sale by the original owner. It had ~ 55K miles and was even the same color as my wife's RX7 - blue. Long story short, we took possession last Thursday.
The car was always garaged in the winter and is in great shape. The owner had a new clutch installed about 8 years ago and as an engineer maintained it carefully. There are a few things though that will need attention over time - electric antenna does not go up and down (I'd like to repair this and not replace it with a fixed mast), original push button radio doesn't tune across the entire band (I'll probably replace this with a new unit), seat upholstery should be redone - especially the driver's seat and paint on top of both bumpers is faded. I also plan to install brighter headlights.
So far, we've only driven it a few times. I'll admit to being used to front wheel drive cars so I find the steering play unusual but once I learned not to drive it like my Honda and instead to get the revs somewhat high when shifting it was a lot of fun.
We're going to store it for the winter and probably won't address any of the above items till next year. I do have one question but I'll ask that in a separate email.

Hi Greg, we don't insist on intros but it's kind of you and shows interest.
Very welcome mate. Where are you on the globe? Somewhere cold from your other post?

Cheers, Codge

I'm guessing... going out on a limb here... somewhere in upstate New York, Dave? ;)

Welcome, Greg! Your wife is clearly a lady of rare taste and discernment, and that's a great story of you two going back to your roots. Testament to the rotary that a Honda owner feels they rev too high
