Hi All
I am finally starting to plan my shopping list for building the motor I want to for my 81 RX7.
The plan is to build a NA street port motor based on the S5 turbo block, large street port, 48 IDA weber, RX8 e-shaft with thermal pellet mod and oil jet mods. Stock side seals and oil rings. Race rotor bearings, solid corner seals with series 6 corner springs. Mazda race bearings, etc.... Basically stock seals or Mazda race parts.
I am going to keep the turbo rotors in the event I decide later in life that a turbo is needed.....
So onto the actually topic of debate...... What Apex seals and springs to use in this build?????? So far I am leaning towards stock apex seals, also spoke to someone here in SA who advised to double up on the apex seal springs, anyone done/heard of this?
What you guys think? Apex seals? Any other changes/mods advised?
Thanks in advanced for the help!
NA Street Port Apex Seals
Re: NA Street Port Apex Seals
.
I canna say on which kind of apex seals manufacture to suit as it's personal choice. Mazda apex seal or benty steel one like ASL, atkins, haywards, and other home made special...
if for a N/A, my choice's on Carbon or iannetti ceramic apex seals
For the turbo, go for Mazda apex seals as they' are the best of the best or iannetti ceramic apex seals
Soild corner seals is fine from atkins
Thinner corner seal spring like 12A 's one is better for N/A cos turbo series 6 one do digging in the side plates faster and wear quicker.
Oil jet mod is okay for high rev all motor race engine and if you are planning for street turbo and don't brother with it.
If rebuild for turbo, better go for new side plates, rotor housings, very good condition rotors as it help to hold on the pressure without leaking( used semi worn housings do leaked like a roof when it's rain)
ON a N/A, reused all very good conition plates and housings will do fine.
thinking that you heard wrong about double up the apex seal spring and it was sound more like "double up the side seal springs".
all of it a personal choice!...... like my choice's on a PP all motor as I love it .won races with it and....... it's simply the best.

Re: NA Street Port Apex Seals
Thanks, it will be a street car. Want to keep the engine bay clean, simple and empty. Doing a full wire tuck on the car, want to just have the engine hiding in they bay.
I am not building it to set any records or anything, mainly just a fun car to drive everyday and still be relatively competitive on drag/race days.
Just want to find out what others have had good results with and want to build a motor that will be reliable for many years to come.

Re: NA Street Port Apex Seals
love a clean wireless engine bay
Simple way to do the rebuild is going standard with good street porting.
Honest, don't need all race mazda bearings all mazda race stuff and stay with standard mazda parts and it will be reliable in long team.( only on a N/A all motor as turbo do go bang sometime in it life on poor tuning)
Fav saying of mine, Any one can go turbo.. it's so oookay! but going into all motor's special.

2 piece Mazda steel seals will be fine for NA and turbo. Carbon's are no good for turbo motor. If you think you will go turbo later, go with steel seals.
I prefer carbons in NA motors. They won't chew housings like steel seals. But, you're running a S5 block and you can still get new housings so not as much of an issue like 12A.
I wouldn't double up on apex seal springs. Centrifugal force keeps them against the housings just fine. Did you mean double side seal springs?
FD style corner seal springs will put more pressure on the side plates, but S5 plates are nitrided. Don't lep them too much.

Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......
Re: NA Street Port Apex Seals
So the choice becomes... To carbon or not as that will decide if I later decide to turbo the motor. I don't think I will want to go the turbo route in future as I want to keep things simple.
Ok, so doubling the Apex is a NO. Thanks! It was definitely Apex seals they were talking about. I know about the side seal springs being doubled up, would you recommend this?
I am just trying to find out what has been tried, what works and what doesn't. Probably will only get one chance to do this right so figured I would ask the people that know and get it right first time.
At this stage I am still in the building the shopping list so the more info the better.

If you run carbon seals, you have to run the matching carbon seal springs. DO NOT DOUBLE THEM.Ghostkls wrote:So the choice becomes... To carbon or not as that will decide if I later decide to turbo the motor. I don't think I will want to go the turbo route in future as I want to keep things simple.

I am considering doubling up the side seal springs on my next build. Much more useful on high revving motors though. Not so much on a street motor. Not a huge expense to do it though.
Atkins seals, Mazda and all the others make fine apex seals for a street motor.
Watch out with that RX8 e-shaft though.

Thanks for the advice and info Tool! That helps a lot.
What should I watch out for with the RX8 E-Shaft?

The RX8 e-shaft oil galleries don't line up. It can be modified, but there's minimal gains to be made, so I'll stick with RX7 e-shafts until they run out.......
