My oil pressure always sits at around 30psi at idle and rises to a little over 60psi from about 1800rpm. I have another pressure gauge in the centre console and have the same behaviour from that one.

My biggest fear is burning a motor due to oil problems so as part of my priming the fuel pump I pull the fuse to the to fuel pump and let the motor crank a few times before the first start attempt.

I have a full routine that I follow before the car comes close to starting to make sure no gremlins have crawled in while I wasn't looking.

What oil pressure are you guys seeing at idle?

When a 500-horse crate 502 comes out of the crate, direct from the GM assembly, with 5 PSI at hot idle, and that's the way it is, there's no need for anyone else to be worrying about anything more.

At 5 psi in a rotary the oil won't even make it out of the end of the E-shaft, let alone support massive bearing surfaces like the rotor bearings :?

I'd want to see a lot more than that gauge is showing, not sure offhand what mine is at idle but at cruising revs (3,000), say) mine usually sits over 60psi.

Maybe I can't argue that, but a crank bearing is a crank bearing, Chevy, Ford, or Honda, and it is bearing clearances that determine volume. Maybe a rotary needs volume, but I can't yet believe the pressure matters when you don't even have lifters. And of all the parts of a BBC V8, the thing lack of pressure would hurt first is lifters. So maybe I stand partly corrected, maybe you confused volume with pressure.

that's sad news Keith but changing circumstances mean sometimes cars have to go...it's happened plenty of times to me.

Thanks Ian. My wife and I have already decided that we will someday own another 1st Gen, one way or another. But I think the first one will always have a special place....

is there a friend who might be interested in buying and would sell back to you when you could afford to buy it back?
