E-fan Ignition Wiring

Sup guys! I'm finally about to install my electric fan and controller on the 7 and I'm curious on where to get the ignition source from? Not the best with wiring aye :lol:. Planning to get my power from the battery terminal and Steve suggested using an existing earth at the headlight motor area.

Does it give you any idea of current draw through the ignition wire?
I would think it will be minimal as the red +ve will be powering the fans and the ignition powering the controller, get your multi-meter out and have a poke about in the engine bay or run a wire back inside the car to the ignition switch wiring or fuse box wiring.

From the diagram the controller looks like a Relay,
I would keep the 3 Earths as close to source as possible, less wires the better! Just make sure they are good if you use existing holes & scrape any paint/rust away.

Does it state if the Fan will over run once ignition is turned off or does it have a timer?

The ignition source should only be LIVE when ignition is on. DO NOT take the feed from any of the Coils etc, best taken from a feed around Fuse box or Ignition Lock.

The main Pos feed should come directly as possible from the Battery.

Any one else agree/disagree/

I'd reckon that it would be minimal current going through the ignition wire aye. I don't have a multimeter ! :roll: Haha.

Should of mentioned that I am only installing 1 fan! But yeah I will clean it up :)

This is from the product info blurb I linked to:
"It can run 1 or 2 fans. The second fan (if applicable) will start 10 seconds after Fan #1 runs. It operated thermally & also when the air conditioning is in operation."

You could use the green air con wire as a manual overide switch in the car ;)

Looking at the setting procedures, I would be very careful about their procedure as it advises letting the engine run above normal operating temperature to set, not a good thing as we all know with our engines :o , perhaps another forum member has already used them & has had experience of them?

Any Forum member out there has them fitted & could advise :?:

Good idea :)

I don't think anyone else has one of these aye. I might just set it around 90 or 95 and see if my gauge sits in its usual location aye

Ive got one of these Davies Craig set ups, except single 16". They work great, just follow the instructions. I've got mine set up to come on a tad above normal temp, runs until a tad below normal temp which takes about 30s on a 30c day when stationary. My hot tip is to use thermal conductive paste on the probe (if it is an "insert into the cooling fins" style one), like they use on computer heat-sinks. Get the best one you can find. I can't remember where I grabbed my ignition source as i wired it up a couple years ago and its all wrapped up now, but it doesn't matter as long as its a turn key ign source because its just a trigger for the relay. The power should be wired direct to battery with a fuse and a good clean earth.

thermal conductive paste on the probe should not withstand cleaning the watercooler with highpressure cleaner and the paste sucks mud and oil. Better you put the probe inside of a watercooler.

But as i can see on your fantasic car picture th: you have finished the heatshield for the turbo. Any update in your thread?

Yes you are right, a probe directly into the coolant is ideal, but i had this e-fan set up on my old radiator and i knew it works so kept it (for now). The probe is completely captive in the core as there is a cap either side, so not too much danger of contaminating the thermal paste, and i dont let pressure washers near my car lol!
