Double S Exhausts Licences

Post by MMOELLER »

Hello rx7 guys,

after some time i am back...(with my own 7)
last month i purchased an used 1981 Mazda rx7.
Normally no problem, but i wanted to get it licensed to drive it on the streets.
The car is in a good condition but the local license workshop noticed
that is has a aftermarket stainless steel exhaust system.
The person told me there is a Double S Exhausts sign on it.
Now my car won´t get licensed until i will get more informations
about the exhaust systems. Are there any papers with data of the exhaust system?
I really need them for the tüv to drive my car here in germany.

@ian65
I saw your post in 2011. Do you have some license papers of the exhaust system?

Hope you guys can help me! :)

Man, what is with the Germans. I tried to get a tyre place to fit some tyres a few years back and he wanted to see the papers for the car which specified which tyres I was allowed to fit on my car.
How about round black ones?
End rant

I can't help with papers though.
Back in the UK for the summer, maybe longer......

I bought the 7 from a seller in the netherlands.
And there it isn´t so difficult to get a car on the streets.
Now i am standing here with my rx7 but without the license
to drive the car because the previous owner installed this
aftermarket exhaust system.
Hope a picture can help a little bit, i don´t have a picture from below :/

That are the pcitures after cleaning the car from inside.

The instructions with the system are to reset CO to 3.0% to 4.5% after fitment, whilst idling at 900rpm.
That will be more than the original thermal reactor system - but most UK owners fit a Janspeed or Double S system like the one in the link. (The Elford system was just like the Double S)

The UK MOT test has rotaries of this age group exempt from emmissions testing so we have no problems on the annual test.
In answer to your question, the 3% to 4.5% is the output specification if you tune it corrrectly at 900 rpm idle speed.

That are pretty good informations for me.
But the main thing i need is a type approval for the exhaust system.
The German TÜV needs a type approval so that they can say that it is legit to use it.
Any documents? The support didn´t understood my problem. :|

Hi,

I'm not sure that in the 1980's that a UK company would have obtained TUV approval ?

You might be able to get some information from Double S themselves ? They were very helpful when it came to the supply of an exhaust for my S2 Elford.

I´ve quickly phone them at about 5 pm or so.
I talked with a very nice person named andrew.
Unfortanely he couldn´t help me because the tüv sign on their
website is only saying that some of their exhaust products have them.
The one for the mauda rx7 didn´t got one because it wasnt so productive for them to do it.
They haven´t sold that much of these type of exhaust systems. My bad, now i have to get
it somehow registered. :?:

Even though the car finished production 30 years ago? You still need a type approval?
Strict rules over there!
