rebuild elford turbo
rebuild elford turbo
rebuild elford/ got me master rebuild kit from atkins today. and a street port template. exhaust only. the 2 rotar housings i am using have a smaller exhaust port than the original ones, so i thought of porting them street port to bring them up to size of old rotar housings. will this cause any problems. cheers mont

Re: rebuild elford turbo
Good to hear you are going to tackle this job yourself.
Opening up the exhaust ports will not hurt at all.
If you have the motor apart, it makes sense to port the intake as well though. You can go as mild or wild as you like.
Remember though, porting the motor will change the port timing of the engine.
NA motors you port up more on the exhaust.
Turbo motors you port down more on the exhaust, to get the turbo spooling quicker.

Re: rebuild elford turbo
The only difference in housings is for emissions.
Take a look at my housings for sale thread and you'll see them next to the exhaust port.
Other than that, they're the same. Front housing and rotor is always number 1.

Re: rebuild elford turbo
hi all.engine now rebuilt.turns over smoothly, makes all the right wooshing noises. but i sheared a bolt on the rear stationary gear.[torque wrench malfunction] tried to retap . but made a mess of it. do you think 5 bolts will be ok. i know i should repair, but i will have to
remove and helicoil, surely 5 will be ok.

Re: rebuild elford turbo
The bolts for the stat gears are very low tensile and easy to overtighten. Same as the sump bolts.
The stat gear is a tight fit in the rear plate so will be held in place by this. The dowel pin stops it rotating. The bolts are there to stop it walking as far as I can see. I would say you could run it with 5 bolts no problem. 6 is best.
If you snapped one, it should be easy to remove and replace without tapping it unless you've really buggered it up trying to get it out.

Sump bolts are so easy to strip... learnt my lesson a long time ago...... the manual says to torque them 5-7 ft/lbs...... no chance......... I just do them by feel these days.TOOL wrote:The bolts for the stat gears are very low tensile and easy to overtighten. Same as the sump bolts.

Re: rebuild elford turbo
yes messed it up big time. tried an easy out, but would not budge, didnt want to brake that off in there, so drilled, and tried to tap[ must have been of centre] half a bolt came out but depth of thread was no good. .dont want to remove rear gear and hellicoil. so 5 it is. i know 6 is right ,but as you said i cant see it be in a problem. cheers. is it worth me opening up the waste gate on the elford before it gets to go back in or not?

Re: rebuild elford turbo
You can take the stat gear out no problem. Just keep the motor vertical so the rotor doesn't move otherwise it's a fiddle to get it back in the right spot.
