Donkey Work :!: Take a photo of(or mark) the strut plate in situ prior to removing so you know which way it fits back :!:

Also use a good quality ring spanner with extension (here is one I made earlier as sockets do not fit properly) for removing the 17mm bolts:-

Having driven down a bumpy road the other day I heard some "Knocking" noises coming from the struts DOH :o

I took the the struts off again (came off easy this time) & found that the inserts were rattling against strut sides. I removed the inserts and placed 2 thin O rings on Insert & coaxed them back in (fiddly job) & then placed a thicker O ring in the top & tightened the retaining nut down forcing it in tight, refitted strut & no more rattling yay

Finally I fitted a rubber (self adhesive back) mini spoiler to match the rear :D

and finaly, buy some muscle ache cream (Algepan or the like) for the next day -haha-

I have read through this, and although you got replacement dampers in the end, why did you guys not rebuild the original dampers? or use a set of MR2 konis?
