The Smurph

Post by The_Smurph »

Hi, i think this is actually my first post on here sorry i kinda skipped the introduction but i have a FB which had a 12a n/a and am attempting to fit my newly aquired 13b n/a
it came with flywheel and clutch for rx8 which obvioulsy wont work on the 12a box, so i am looking for a fly and clutch that will fit. its a S3 12a so am looking at 225mm and non turbo.

looking to sell my rx8 lightened flywheel and exedy 235mm clutch also but that wil just end up on ebya unless anyone wants.

so if anyone has what im after or knows where i could get one let me know, also i am slightly worried about balancing. as the current flywheel is lightened there is a counterweight fitted, and a standard fc flywheel is counterweighted? non neutral so will end up unbalancing the engine if fitted, or ditch the fly and counter and all will be fine..??? or fit a 13b n/a flywheel lightened so that the counter weight stays?? really confused on this one kinda feel im just guna end up having 3 of everything sat here until i make it work.

cheers in advance

heres a few pics to give some perspective and add something more interesting than a confused mans rant to this post.

Hi Smurph.
Can't answer your questions as I'm not a racer or modifier.
But I can welcome you on here. Consider yourself duly welcomed.

(Picked you and your car up on Exile a few years back, so you're on the register already).

Cheers
Codge (Dave).

Dude, is that flywheel held on with nuts? WTF?

You will need to keep the rear counterweight on the motor. I don't care what you've been told is in there, you have no way of knowing for sure without pulling it down.
You can't even be sure it's got the right counterweight on it.

Get a NA light flywheel and clutch or better yet fit a turbo box and keep everything as is.

You can go 215mm or 225mm. Makes no difference with a light flywheel.

Clutches I've got. No NA spare light flywheels. Try Pip at WGT.

yeah no idea whats going on with those nuts the thread has been randomly ground down as well, just figured someone knew better but i am wondering if they just didn't trust the flywheel nut. or didnt torque it enough and had problems :/
this engine was originally rebuilt by hayward for a mk1golf on a beetle pan built by pipey mcgraw, but since then has been sat in a escort hence the rx8 drivetrain so that chap must have boshed the fly and clutch on there. so im not even sure if that counterweight was on before the fly or went on with it.
i havent got it off yet as waiting for the 54mm to get it off with, but i assume the counterweight will have some form of way of identifying it stamped.

im on the market for a clutch so please give me details pics/price of that either on thread or via pm. happy with a 225mm.
who is this pip? some chap i spoke with a while back mentioned a pip gardner? ill look him up and contact. cheers

Better had Smurph.....in case FB spotters pull up outside yours and start pointing......all members on here are under instructions to spot and report.....

Pip is indeed Pip Gardner. He's at WGT in the Nantwich area of Cheshire. A good bloke but can be had to get hold of.

oddly the bloke that told me about pip was a 71 year old who i met around my local area as he has driven nothing but his s2 rx7 for 30 years and done 280,000 miles in it rebuilding his engines himself. quite a knowledgeable chap and was more than happy to chat 12a's all day long. i was hoping he would like to buy my 12a engine as its for sale and figured he would make use of it but hes getting old and i think hes giving up on the brap life and using a crappy hyundai i10 as daily now. made me laugh wehn he said first time driving a piston in 30 years.
anyway he mentioned pip as one of the guys he would recommend.. odd seeing as we are down southwest here.
and here's his car i bumped into him at a petrol station when in the work van one day, glad i got a pic (im an fb spotter too) shame he will never join the internet or forums.

Weren't Elford Engineering somewhat infamous for color coded body kits / wheels / mirrors? That looks like a definite candidate. Very tidy.

I spotted the White Elford in Aug 2014 near Honiton (I was in my 7) & we both waved/looked in amazement at each other.

Here is a link for a clutch plate on Ebay:-

Where do you live, must be near Taunton/Honiton I guess, I am down S Devon.
