Painting cast alloy inlet manifolds

I want to paint the inlet manifolds on my engine. I can't be bothered to polish them and if I clean them back to clean alloy they will just oxidise again so I reckon painting is the way to go...










I want something pretty durable and tough.... thinking of something like this...

Does it suggest any sort of acid etch primer first?

It seems to be OK as you won't exceed those temps, so should be fine. You will have a lot of prep to do.

Hi Ian POR15 always good stuff to use should do the trick, while i'm on the subject of POR15 which i like everybody else on the forum favours as the no1 choice in rust prevention i was looking at a R33 gtst on ebay that a chap had restored and he is using bulk container marine paint has all the same properties as POR15 apparently but comes in many colours and is a hell of a lot cheaper and their is a company in wolverhampton that make it i am going to go over in the new year to check this out as i like everbody else could go through litre of the stuff in my resto work on all cars ive restored and yet have to will put up a posting if its any good.

I'd be interested to know how you get on with that.... Wolves isn't far from me... POR15 is good stuff but the cost is very high, especially when the bleeding stuff goes off the second you open the tin.

I'll use trade alloy wheel cleaner..... an acid solution to clean the manifolds back Pete.... this will get rid of the crud and etch the surface for paint at the same time.... the dirt and oxidisation just drops of using this stuff.
They were like this yesterday...





and after 20 minutes they looked like they do in the pictures in my previous post. I could just clean them back with wheel cleaner and top coat them with lacquer but I don't know how that would stand up.
Whatever I end up coating them with I'll have to clean all the crud off them first.

Hi Ian have just found this company on ebay dont know how to put up ebay link so item no is 141706912120 £19.79 a litre this is chassis enamel, POR15 always remined me of enamel paint i used to paint my airfix models with as a kid!!! they do free P&P so i'm going to get some and try it out will let you know what i think of it!! Its a much cheaper than POR15

What about powder coating? It was fairly cheap when I took that whole lot to get done. I was really surprised aye. Could get a few bits done at the same time? I believe there is a chrome type colour if you want shiney . They do all the work also
