1975 RX-4 SEDAN - BUILD THREAD - SCABSY

Post by Scabs »

Hello all,

About that time to start my build thread, I'll let you guys know what I've got to so far.

As it stands, I bought the RX-4 in a stripped condition, with alot of welding done but still needing a few bits more. "Majority" of parts are there and I'm sure I'm missing a few bits and bobs which I can hopefully obtain later down the road like little bits of the gorgeous silver trim ect.

So I'm currently waiting for a bay down my barracks car club where I will be restoring her.
In the mean time I am sorting the foot work and underside of the car.

Started stripping the steering box and idler arm this week and refurbished them, just waiting for gasket paper and some steering box greese to put back together. Same with the idler arm just waiting on some super pro bushings.

So the direction I'm going with her is:

Engine:
12a S3 NA
EMPI 51 EPC carbs with enlarged bowls (Weber knockoffs, all parts are interchangeable)
Peripheral Ports, large!
Glimmer drive set
Holley black fuel pump+reg
Battery relocation
Custom exhaust ect etc

You kinda get the idea: loud, obnoxious, but very simple.

Exterior:
Keeping stock, wield the holes in the pointy hood from the horrible hood ornament.
Not sure about the paint yet want to get her into a rolling chassis state before I start toying with that (last thing on my mind at the moment!).
I think I may keep the 4x110 PCD hubs due to simplicity and maybe find some lovely rare wheels.

Interior:
Really haven't even thought about it, but depending how much of the original interior Id like to keep it stock with a few personal touches like gauges wideband etc.

Blah blah blah I feel like I'm going on but my main concern is that get it into a rolling state. Here's a load of pictures from the last month.

It would be great if you could go into a bit more detail about the steering box rebuild, as I know its is an issue for many here - as well as myself. Thanks.

Where did you get the empi carb? I have heard the empi ones are better made than the Spanish webers

Hi mate, ofc I'm just waiting for a few more items and then I'll write a guide on how to refurbish the box. Not entirely sure if the FB and 4 share the same outlay but will look into that.

And yes it's quite controversial about EMPI VS Webber, I've heard that they are also better made but I'm not sure if that's a small marketing campaign. They are still pretty pricey for knock offs so they can't be entirely pump. I got them from harborside parts in USA they carbs cost me 500 GBP with 100 import duties ( I hate parcel force!) Anybody know a way to get past these import duties with out be bummed?!

The carbs are basically a Webber 48 IDA made into a 51 with lager bowls. So alot more inexpensive than buying a 48 Ida and then getting it converted! All parts are interchangeable which is also good.
