Ian's S3 13b Turbo II Conversion
Ever since I first saw a 1st gen RX7, ( which incidentally was an Elford Turbo in Bournemouth in 1984 ) I always wanted an Elford Turbo.
It took me until 2010 when I converted my old black series 3 before I finally got to own and drive one and they are the only 1st gens I've owned and driven since.
Time moves on though and there are plenty of other performance options to upgrade FB's these days.
Since around 1990 I've always wanted to drop a Turbo II engine into a first gen car, even before this became a pretty common conversion and have been actively planning to do this swap for the last 3 years as detailed earlier in this thread.
I've now joined the 'Elford Turbo - been there, done that, society' and last Sundays thrash down to the Retrorides Gathering and back was this cars last hurrah as an Elford turbo....
This morning I decided to pull this engine out and return it to Keith who had kindly lent it to me to keep me on the road after my own engine blew up in 2015...

Into the garage for major surgery...

Bonnet off...

Started stripping the rad etc out...

I'm going to lose most of this untidy wiring and inspired by Jesse I'm going to move the battery inside the car to free up space for the intercooler pipework...

It was then time to pull the lump and the transmission...

And it's out... the engine bay looks a bit forlorn now...

whilst it awaits this...

Filled with a mixture of both excitement and trepidation, I'm looking forward to this build.

Re: Ian's S3 13b Turbo II Conversion
looks bloody scary to me too, fitting the engine in the hole is the easy bit... getting it to run....

As my first girlfriend used to say, " getting it in is easy, it what you do with it next that counts"

Took some more of the exhaust off today and drained the petrol out of the tank, it'll only go stale over the winter... might as well use it in the GTI. I'm also going to strip out that racked off alarm system. I've been looking where I can mount a swirl pot, I don't want any of the fuel system in the passenger compartment or to butcher my fuel tank so it needs a bit of thought.
Mounting the engine is my priority... it's a real shame that although UK S3's share lots of parts with the Stateside GSL-SE they don't share the GSL-SE crossmember .... it would have all just have bolted straight up then after drilling a couple of new holes.... I'll have to modify my existing engine bracket... I'm not confident that a mig will get enough penetration on this bracket so I'll tack it up then find someone to gas weld it for me, I can then drop the engine and transmission in and measure for the propshaft.
