KIMI 2 - 1983 Series 2

Post by Ian.M »

A continuation from the previous owners project thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2989

A little over a year into my ownership of this car its about time I actually started a project thread and try to keep it updated.

A very brief history:

In 2015, Malcolm (casey) agreed the purchase this RX-7 from someone who had contacted him via the Mazda Rotary Club. It had been off the road for about ten years and we knew from the previous owner that it needed some work doing to get it back on the road. So Malcolm hired a self-drive transporter and off we went to collect the car. Worst case scenario would be that we get it back and find it too far gone to repair and it would be used for spare parts towards Malcolm’s other FB; however, on first inspection it was clear this was way too good to scrap and deserved to be recommissioned. My parents kindly agreed to let us store the car and work on it in their back garden, and after a few months of work, it passed an MOT and Kimi2 was back on the road (I’ll let Malcolm explain the whole Kimi name!)

Kimi2 has been very well looked after during Malcolm’s ownership with excellent attention to detail (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2989).

The sale:

In 2019 I was somewhat surprised to see when Malcolm purchased a third RX-7 FB for his collection (Kimi3) and indicated that Kimi2 would be going up for sale. Having seen all the work that went into Kimi2 and helping to get her back on the road back in 2015 I very quickly got in touch with Malcolm to arrange probably the quickest and easiest car sale in history. Deal done, paperwork was signed, and I was the proud owner of a car that I had spent several hours working on a few years earlier. (I just had to explain to my wife how we were going to fit 4 cars on our driveway).

The car and the photos:

So Kimi2 is a 1983 RX-7 FB Series 2 and at the time of buying had just over 44.5k miles on the clock. A credit to both previous owners is the nearly immaculate interior – the seats and carpets are like new! As far as I know, everything is working as it should be (although the engine could probably do with a bit of minor tuning / tweaking). There is no major rust as the previous owner had given the underside a liberal coating of grease every few years, but there are some areas that will need attention sooner rather than later (bottom of the drivers side A-pillar, drivers side rear suspension mounting). Otherwise it is mostly cosmetic issues, and a few small patches of rust bubbling through the old paintwork in places.

Here are a few photos taken after a few days into my ownership of Kimi2.

Myatt i am absolutly with you. Those grey s2 seats are the great.

I would change the 37 years old fuel lines on this car. Take lines compatible to the new fuel E 10. ;s;

Funny you should mention the fuel lines... I have spent today taking the fuel tank off the car to get refurbished and give the underside a clean up. The metal lines look good, but I will be replacing all the rubber bits :thumbup:

I saw the picture of your old OEM fuellines in the engine room. Nobody need the risk of fire there.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
It's a credit to the previous owners; I just hope I can keep it looking and running great.
