Ok I had a go at removing the air filter cover by releasing the 4 spring clips but it wouldn't budge. Tried tapping it with a hammer but it still wouldn't budge. Looked in the Haynes manual but nothing there. Looked at a guy in the states on youtube remove the lid, it just lifted off when he released the 4 clips. Obviously I don't want to damage anything by being two heavy handed. Am I missing something or should I just hit it with a monkey wrench?
Maybe that is why Cliff left where it was despite you pointing it out Thomas, years ago.

The top should just pop off with all the clips snapped loose. I believe there is a seal around the lid that prevents air from leaking in around the lid to body. I suspect the seal is stuck to the body after 40 some years. With that mileage the air cleaner lid has probable not been removed in decades. Very nice car by the way.

don't hit it with anything! Ever!! Cliff had the car serviced and the air filter changed so it hasn't been stuck on there for decades.... it's just stuck on the seal. Spray some wd40 around the edge of it to see if it loosens it.... steady pressure pulling upwards should see it break free.

Catch the blow-dryer of your wife and warming up the top only! Otherwise you will need the Spezialisten mazda dismantling tool for sa22c. 😅🤣😂

Sorry Ian, but wd 40 will destroy the rubber seal inside i think.
